There’s something about the charcoal chicken at Sydney’s El Jannah…

Is it the secret marinade? Perhaps it’s the garlic sauce? Whatever it is, all we know is that this Lebanese chicken is so good, we’ve named it our must-try dish of the week.

Is that the full name?

You can get the charcoal chicken in all sorts of iterations, but for the whole family, or a small group of friends, we can’t go past the “Whole chicken meal” on the menu.

Where do you get it?

El Jannah, 4/8 South St, Granville NSW 2142 but there are locations all over Sydney.

Why is it a winner?

Where once in-the-know Sydneysiders would have to make a pilgrimage to Western Sydney for El Jannah’s famous charcoal chicken, now there are locations popping up everywhere, but that doesn’t make it any less of a cult favourite. When you’ve got to feed the family, we can’t go past the Whole chicken meal. For less than 30 bucks you get a whole butterflied chicken in a Middle Eastern marinade cooked over real charcoal and you can really taste it. Then there’s warm Lebanese bread, chips, tabouli or coleslaw, brightly coloured mixed pickles and the crowning glory: what EJ’s calls the “famous garlic sauce”. We know it’s a traditional family recipe, but the rest is a secret. But it’s no secret that if you smother everything in it all will be right with the world. We promise.

Anything else to know?

El Jannah seems to be taking over the country right now. Last month, they opened a new store in Baulkham Hills and next month they cross the state border with a Melbourne restaurant set to open in Preston.
