It’s the Italian dessert that conquered the world…
But far from being everyday or boring, the tiramisù at Sydney’s a’Mare is something really special. That’s why it’s our nostalgic must-try dish of the week.
Is that the full name?
No, it’s “Tiramisù al Cucchiaio” on the menu which literally means “Spoon tiramisù” because it’s served tableside with a big spoon.
Where do you get it?
a’Mare, Crown Sydney, Level 1/1 Barangaroo Ave, Barangaroo NSW 2000
Why is it a winner?
You’ve just finished an excellent Italian meal at a’Mare. You’re basking in that post-good dinner glow and you think you couldn’t possibly fit another thing in, but you order the tiramisù anyway because, well, you only live once. You watch as the waiter brings a large tray of it to the table and scoops a generous, nonna-sized amount of it onto your plate. You’ve had tiramisù before, who hasn’t?, so you’re expecting something pleasant, something even comfortingly banal. But then you taste it. It’s full of espresso coffee flavour, rich mascarpone and sweet savoiardi biscuits, balanced by bitter cocoa. This is the very opposite of banal. Because it isn’t just tiramisù, it’s acclaimed chef Alessandro Pavoni’s childhood memory of tiramisù . And it is perfetto!
What does the chef say?
Anything else to know?
a’Mare is all about the old-school theatre of Italian dining which is why so many dishes are either made, finished or served at the table. From the Trofie al Pesto to the Burrata Caprese, this way of eating adds a lot of drama and just fun to the dining experience. We highly recommend it!
