You're probably wondering what the reference to iconic gangster film The Godfather has to do with Sydney's must-try dish of this week?

Then again, if you’re a fan of Tony Soprano and Vito Corleone and co., you’ve probably already figured it out.  Yes we’re talking cannoli, and we would absolutely leave the gun and take the ones made by Leichhardt’s Mezzapica, no matter the situation.

Is that the full name?

Yes, cannoli. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

Where do you get it?

Mezzapica Cakes, 130 Norton St, Leichhardt NSW 2040

Why is it a winner?

Cannoli are not just the Italian dolce of choice for wise guys the world over – they are also a much loved pastry hailing from Sicily that are part of any serious Italian celebration. The ones from Mezzapica, a cake shop which has stood in the traditional Italian migrant heartland of Leichhardt since 1952, are exceptional. A perfectly deep-fried crisp and crunchy shell, not too sweet, is filled with smooth ricotta and dusted in just the right amount of icing sugar. Ricotta is the traditional filling, but you can also get chocolate or vanilla custard. It’s up to you what you go with, but make the right choice, or you’ll be sleeping with the fishes…

Anything else to know?

In a classic scene from The Sopranos, Tony rings Christopher to tell him to buy “sfogliatell and cannoli… for the guys”. By “sfogliatell”, he means sfogliatelle and you’ll find this Neapolitan pastry at Mezzapica too. It’s layer upon layer of thin, crispy pastry, shaped like a shell, with a deliciously sweet ricotta filling. Take it from us, you should not refuse these either.
