It’s an oversimplification to say what makes American cuisine are foods like burgers, fries and onion rings because other cuisines, such as Mexican have merged with it to form different types of American cuisine. Just like how different versions of cuisines, such as Chinese have emerged and changed over here in the UK. Here we’ll focus on the imported and remodified version of American cuisine, the one we see often in movies and has spread like wildfire in the UK. What makes a restaurant American to us is not just the food, but the atmosphere. For example, bowling alleys, flashy lights and all you can eat are all typical in how we think of American cuisine. Here’s a guide to some of our favourite American eateries in Manchester.
Bunny Jackson’s looks and feels like an authentic American diner (to us Brits anyway). They have the best chicken wings we have tasted in Manchester, from as little as 20p per wing! We recommend the Jack Daniel’s Smoked Honey Mustard BBQ Wings, which are absolutely delicious and are only 40p. Bunny Jackson’s allows you to mix and max your wings and to even participate in the hot wings challenge! You will likely need to order pints of milk after tackling that though. With live music and sport often on offer, and the addition of typical American food like dippers, onion wings and fries, you are guaranteed to have a fun time. Veggie options like cauliflower wings and fried pickles are also available.
What is more New York than arcades and bowling? The Dog Bowl is an NY-inspired arcade and bowling alley located just off Oxford Road, opposite the O2 Ritz arena. They have teamed up with NQ64 (an arcade bar chain) to get the very best classic games. When we say classics, we mean the very best. For example, Space Invaders, Mortal Kombat and Pac-Man. Their food is delicious too as it’s created by 9Cut Fried Chicken, the child of previously reviewed and highly recommended Yard & Coop. What’s more, they have fabulous deals too. From happy hours and a beer burger bowl deal, to student and kid offers too.
Rum, ribs, bourbon and beer best describes what Cane & Grain is all about. Located in the Northern Quarter, this 80s skater joint is truly American. From craft IPAs, such as Goose Island to American cocktails made with rum and bourbon, they provide you with a wide range of fantastic drinks. On the food side, it is just as mouth-watering. The typical bite-sized foods like mac ‘n’ cheese and fries are recommended. So too are their ribs!
Contrary to the name, their burgers are famous! The reason their burgers are so good is because they know what makes a good patty. Serving 100% prime cuts of beef with the very best creamy and drippy cheese, along with soft but sturdy buns. They serve typical American foods like fries and chicken wings, too. We recommend their Liberty Famous burger. You won’t be disappointed.
Most of the places above serve great and tasty vegan and veggie options, but none are 100% vegan. The V Rev Vegan Diner combines the American pallet and appetite with vegan eating. Found in the Northern Quarter opposite Yard & Coop, V Rev Vegan Diner is famous for turning very meaty and cheesy American dishes into vegan classics, whilst keeping the same delicious tastes. The milkshakes and cheesecakes are very much recommended. You won’t be able to tell the difference between vegan and non-vegan food after this experience.
