We know what you’re thinking, Liverpool isn’t quite Bali, however that doesn’t mean you can’t find and experience Indonesian-style food in the heart of Liverpool. Indonesian cuisine is all about fresh spices, fish, veg and meat with a base of fried rice or noodles, and there are PLENTY of exciting restaurants we recommend if you’re fancying spicing up your pallet!

Mamasan can only be found in Glasgow and Liverpool. With its stunning cherry blossom and Instagrammable interior, this is a restaurant and dining experience not to be missed! The food is inspired by the flavours of Southeast Asia including fresh herbs and spices like black pepper, turmeric and lemongrass. Our top recommendation from this tasty menu is the Ichimi Crusted Carpaccio of Beef served with teriyaki onions, pickled shimeji mushroom and a wasabi emulsion. This one isn’t for the faint hearted! It packs a serious punch, and that’s not just because of the wasabi. There are also amazing rice dishes such as Sweet and Sour Pork Belly with sweet and sour onions, charred baby leeks, and red pepper and pineapple ketchup, not to mention the side of mushroom and bone marrow fried rice.
Tiger Rock is the perfect place if you want to try a bit of everything, as the menu features an eclectic offering of East Asian cuisine, including a delicious mixture of Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Singaporean and Vietnamese small plates. Some standout dishes include the Laksa Mee (Singaporean-style coconut chicken curry noodle soup) and Gon Chau Udon (Cantonese-style sliced steak with noodles and beansprouts). The prices are very reasonable and there are three locations to choose from, including Smithdown Road and North John Street in Liverpool City Centre.
May’s Thai is a small, authentic Thai restaurant in the Dingle area of Liverpool. The food served here is fantastic – it’s a small, homely vibe that seats 20 to 30 people. The food is fresh and flavourful, the prices are very reasonable, and the portions are huge! Expect very authentic Thai dishes such as holy basil with either shrimp or chicken, or green curry served with either sweet potato or chicken, which tick off the classic salty, sour, sweet, spicy and creamy flavours of Thailand and Asia. However, if you’re looking for Indonesian flavours, check out the more spicy dishes that are more common in Indonesian cooking because of its Arabic influences.
This is real, authentic, delicious Thai food at its finest! There are many similarities between Thai and Indonesian style cooking – namely a staple of rice and noodles, coupled with huge flavours! One of the main meats in Indonesia is beef, and Rosa’s Thai includes dishes such as the aromatic Beef Massaman Curry, the Soft Shell Crab Salad, Spring Rolls, homemade Sriracha Sauce and Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. All dishes are inspired from the founder, Saiphin Moore’s family favourites and her regular trips back home.
