Night owls rejoice!

When those supper cravings strike and the common mall joints around you are all closed, here are some late night eats around the island that are totally worth the calories (plus they won’t break the bank).

From freshly made pratas, comforting fishball noodles, an assortment of “dimsum”, or steamed confectioneries, to a sinful coconut-laden “laksa”, or coconut gravy noodles, we’re simply spoiled for choice as a foodie nation.

Swee Choon Dim Sum
cuisinesDim Sum

A humble Dim Sum eatery, their late-night hours and generally affordable price point makes them a well-known supper haunt among the night owls, club-goers and dimsum fans alike. Among their classic and signature offerings, their Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun (S$4.80) is one of our personal favourites. One dish that’s uniquely theirs is the Fried Mee Suah Kueh, which is basically classic Vermicelli cooked with shrimps and Chinese sausage, deep fried until golden brown in a cake form. Equal parts of crispy and delish, dip it in some chili for an extra kick!

In recent times, they’ve also expanded their offerings to delivery and frozen dim sum options, which means you can enjoy these bite-sized treats from the comfort of your homes, rather than make the trip down to Jalan Besar!

A dime in a dozen, we daresay fishball noodles are the nation’s staple food choice, at least for the non-Halal population. Imagine a springy bowl of egg noodles filled with an assortment of fish balls and minced meat, topped with chopped spring onions and their signature Fuzhou fish balls with a juicy pork centre. With the rainy weather these days, a piping hot bowl of noods are sure to hit the spot!

Open till 3am, they offer a variety of fishball dishes such as Fuzhou Fishball, Fish Dumpling, and Crispy Pancakes. Best part, each dish is rather affordable, setting you back at S$5 each. Feel free to head down anytime till 4am for your nocturnal BCM fix.

A stone’s throw from another popular supper spot (Chomp Chomp Food Centre), RK Eating House is a popular spot that North-Easterners are more than familiar with. Boasting the tallest tissue prata ($5.50) conceivable, it’ll have to be shared with at least 4 people for this “tower”! Choose your toppings from strawberry or chocolate sauce, maple syrup or honey. As for the tissue prata itself, reviewers have heaped praise on it, saying it’s “crispy yet fluffy at the same time”. For the price, we really think it’s value-for-money! To down their prata, treat your supper gang to their epic 5 litres Teh Tarik ($17) or Milo drinks tower to share! Taste-wise, it’s the perfect ratio of powder, water, condensed milk and ice.

When midnight strikes, some crave savoury foods while those with a sweet tooth hanker for something sweet. For those living along the purple, or North-East line, treat yourself to some crispy warm waffles and meltingly-good ice cream combos like Yakult Oreo, all the way till 2am except Mondays!

Situated in the heartland precinct of Lorong Ah Soo, Lickers is characterised by bright neon lights, long communal benches and a wall filled with popular modern artwork. This is definitely a late night hangout spot geared towards the youth. Exuding a warm and welcoming vibe, the ice cream in question is nothing short of decadent. Despite the humble selection, their flavours are robust and more than compensate in the quality department. Made in artisanal small batches to ensure freshness and consistency, it produces an ice cream that’s velvet smooth and beyond creamy.

Strong stomach or just craving intense, bold spice? Grilled fish restaurants are a dime in a dozen these days, but it’s pretty rare to find one that opens this late. For your fragrant, numbingly spicy grilled fish fix past midnight, check out any of their 3 outlets open till 2am.
