Fact for the day in case you didn’t know, but those days in between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve are collectively known as Twixmas. Many of us are off from work spending time with the family and loved ones. If you’re looking to get out of the house in this period to meet with friends, extended family or simply want to take the kids somewhere, then this guide is for you. We’ve rounded up Ireland’s top restaurants for Twixmas that you can book in with today.
Olive Tree Kitchen, drenched in natural light, provides you with a feast for the senses. From here, you can look out onto the ziplines and aerial trekking courses while sampling a nourishing menu created with local ingredients, including the team’s very own veggie patch on-site. They freshly prepare all food daily in the kitchen. Try one of the daily hot specials or a pizza, cooked in front of you in a traditional Italian firebrick pizza oven, handcrafted in Naples – the birthplace of pizza. The dough is handmade in-house, then proved for 48 hours using the timeless methods of traditional Italian pizza makers. There’s also a wholesome kids menu created especially for the little ones.
Durty Nelly’s can truly be described as one of Ireland’s landmark pubs. Nestling in the shadow of the magnificent Bunratty Castle and the adjoining Folk Park, it’s the first stopping off point for generations of visitors to Ireland arriving at nearby Shannon Airport – ideal for any family flying in for Christmas and New Year’s. Perhaps the biggest single charm of Nelly’s – as it is known locally – is the fact that it’s a meeting place for both locals and tourists alike, and the interaction between the two is what makes it such a unique Irish pub. This is one of the best for Twixmas this year!
At Off The Bone, they’re simply passionate about everything they do: from the origin and freshness of the artisan menu to a paired selection of craft beers, draughts, lagers and speciality spirits. Not to mention the vivacious team of guys n’ gals ready and waiting to give you a good ol’ time this Twixmas! Expect nothing but farm fresh, ocean fresh and market fresh.
If you enjoy high quality food in a traditional pub environment, then you will love John Keogh’s award-winning gastropub! All of the food is prepared daily with the emphasis on local and fresh. The menu offers some of the freshest Galway seafood around, including oysters and mussels. This place is an excellent option if you’re looking to catch up with some pals over Twixmas.
The Westenra Arms hotel is located right in the centre of Monaghan Town, situated on the Diamond. The Westenra is a well established, family-run place, which was purchased by the McEnaney’s in 2003 who then carried out extensive refurbishment. The menu’s created by Head Chef Martin Beggan and his team of highly qualified and trained chefs, who all aim to source and use local produce where possible. The beef is 100% Hereford and when cooked to your liking it’s second to none. There’s also a wide selection of poultry, seafood and seasonal dishes to cater for all discerning palates.
For a fun night catching up with friends, look no further than The DL – an Irish-Asian fusion style cocktail bar and restaurant. There is a popular brunch menu here too, if you’re looking to do something earlier in the day with the gang. From Crispy Egg Benedict to Spiced Pulled Duck with poached eggs, this is a totally different brunch unlike any other you’ll have had.
The Imperial Restaurant brings gastro dining to Cavan Town, so if you’re in the area over Twixmas, this is not one to miss. With the very best of local and Irish food in a casual family-friendly setting, everyone of all ages will be made welcome. Just note this place is only open Wednesdays to Sundays only.
Let’s face it, we’ll be sick of turkey and traditional food by mid Twixmas and craving something different. That’s where pizza comes in. You cannot go wrong with Pomodorino’s wood-fired pizza or the pasta dishes. With thick fluffy crusts and top-quality toppings, this is one of our favourite pizza joints in Ireland.
There’s no better cuisine style than tapas to bring people together. Tapas, although largely associated with Spanish food, can be any type of food, so long as they are served in small portions and meant for immediate gratification. To eat ‘tapas style’ is to eat by whim, free from rules and schedules, which is something Naas Las Radas Wine & Tapas Bar lives by. Choose for your group between the Deluxe Menu and the Dandy Menu this Twixmas for a fun evening out surrounded by good company and great food.
Winter getting a much for you? El Celler Blackrock offers an authentic Catalan and Spanish experience for a true Mediterranean escape. With a selection of traditional dishes as well as a carefully designed wine list that combines wines from prestigious regions of Spain, this is a superb spot for friends and loved ones getting together this Twixmas.
