Say hello to Derby Lane in Glasgow

Finnieston’s hottest new brunch spot is delighting diners with its Insta-worth decor, food and creative cocktails. Colourful, flirty and feminine in style, the service is friendly, while the New York-inspired menu is refreshing, celebrating the most important meal of the day. The venue opened mid-way through 2021, under the ownership of Adam Parsons, and has developed popular signature dishes like its high-end Lobster Roll.

Keep it on the DL

It’s hard to miss as you pass by; bright turquoise blue and hot pink paints with gilt lettering have been used to decorate the striking vintage-look entrance that just begs to be noticed. A neon light glows from within, while diners tuck into beautifully presented food and drink, visible through the large picture windows. When the weather permits, Derby Lane’s patrons can also be found at the pretty wrought iron tables and chairs, perched on the pavement of Finnieston’s cool strip.

Inside, a flourish of artificial purple wisteria and greenery hangs from the ceiling, draping romantically. A bright flamingo and tropical flower feature wallpaper has been used to accent areas above the dado rail, on planters, on the bar and on the menus. Long turquoise banquettes seat the majority of diners, with others accommodated on mustard velvet upholstered mid-century era chairs. A huge mirror creates a sense of infinite space, while a large neon sign mounted on the exposed brick wall invites us to ‘keep it on the DL’ — a fun play on words that evokes the playful spirit of this place. And don’t miss a trip to the loos. They’re arguably some of the most photogenic in the city.

Beverages for brunching

Expect your cocktail to look as pretty (and invariably loud) as the decor. Many are eco-friendly and plenty come with their own evolution story. The venue’s Bloody Mary is one such example: instead of using the standard dry spice found in the traditional beverage, Derby Lane has its own spice mix, based on the owner’s adventures in Asia, that gives the classic breakfast imbibement a more aromatic and sweet taste – because morning drinking is de rigueur here. But of course, it’s not essential and the hot drinks come with double-walled vials of milk where appropriate.

Environmentally conscious and delicious

Like the drinks, the food has a low carbon footprint and looks gorgeous. Like any self-respecting urban brunch joint, eggs benny tops the menu. In addition to the standard bacon, smoked salmon and spinach versions, there’s a fancy seafood Loch Fyne Benedict with langoustines, spinach, lemon and optional caviar; a Spanish inspired benny with Iberico chorizo; and the Scottish choice, Eggs Alba with Stornoway black pudding, haggis and a tattie scone — all served on brioche French toast. These variations are available but served baked in a cast-iron skillet accompanied by soldiers.

You’ll also find smashed avo, banana and manuka honey on toast, a full Scottish (veggie or meaty), soup and granola bowls listed on the flamingo design menu. And if you fancy something a little quirkier, you can try the likes of tofu with chilli coriander, flat-iron steak, haggis and monkey shoulder bonbons with date puree and of course, the famous DL lobster roll. Pastries and puddings also make an appearance, all looking too good to eat, with flourishes like edible flowers (be sure to have your smartphone charged for your Facebook pics).

Decadent drinkies

Fizz, wine and cocktails lead on the drinks menu. Push the boat out by sharing a bottle of Bolly, or opt for a single glass of prosecco if it’s a regular day out. Do try a cocktail if you’re so inclined. The Green-Eyed Fairy, containing Roku Gin, Midori, lemon, sugar, lemongrass, Absinth Rinse and Ting is especially fun, as is a sharing pitcher of Full Moon Tea Party (Hendricks Lunar Gin, Falernum, elderflower liqueur, lemon, orange and cold brew Earl Grey Tea).

Derby Lane definitely lends itself to a day out with the girls, be it a special occasion or a weekly catch up over some bubbles. However, it’s very popular for dates too, with an innate air of whimsical romanticism (and it’s sure to please your latest squeeze). But you don’t have to come for its visual appeal. DL serves up what is undoubtedly tasty scran, with a conscience, so pop in next time you’re out west and discover Derby Lane for yourself.
