When there are so many restaurant options to choose from, making a decision on a restaurant for Mother’s Day can become a puzzling task. We asked our insider, i.e. Dish Cult Australia Editor, Tania Cammarano, along with Sydney Food Blogger, Minal Bhagwat, to tell us where they would take their mum on Mother’s Day. After all, passionate food explorers seek and find the very best of local food!

Say ciao! to our Dish Cult Australia Editor, Tania Cammarano

You could say our Editor knows a thing or two about food – seeing as she has a whole PhD in food history! An ardent food lover, she tells us her favourite spots around Melbourne, Australia for the perfect Mother’s Day, according to the likes of her own beloved Mamma.

1. The Hardware Club – 43 Hardware Lane Upstairs, Melbourne

My mum’s an Italian nonna and not easy to impress, but the boys at Hardware Club take classic Italian dishes and give them an Italo-Australian spin. The pasta is always good, with the pappardelle a stand-out, and I certainly couldn't take my mum there if it was anything less than excellent. They also make their own limoncello, and frequently they change it up and make blood orange and other flavours. I just love this place!

2. Teta Mona – 100A Lygon St, Brunswick East

Packed with Middle Eastern heart, Teta Mona is great for the whole family. Generous platters piled high with flavourful Lebanese food, don’t miss the house dips with fresh labne, zingy baba ghanuj and hommus, or the Cigara bi Lahem, crisp pastry cigars stuffed with spicy lamb drizzled with sticky pomegranate molasses and crushed walnuts. I dare you to stop at one!

3. Arcadia Gastronomique – 152 Union Rd, Ascot Vale

My mum absolutely adores Arcadia’s Pulpo a la Gallega, grilled octopus Galician-style, and if your mum’s like mine she’ll love the seriously good Spanish food on offer here too. The paella is executed perfectly, with my favourite the Valencian black paella which is stuffed to overflowing with cuttlefish, mussels and prawns. Oh and the sangria isn't half bad either! There's no hype, it's just neighbourhood Spanish done right.

1. Flour Drum Cafe – 531 King St, Newtown NSW 2042

Flour Drum is one of my all time favourite cafes. The focus on good quality and local produce makes this the artisanal dream! We loved the coffee here and the juices too. The best part about Flour Drum is the story - 3 friends coming together to open a cafe. It's wholesome! The staff really extend that energy to all the patrons. The vibe is in every way about family and friendship. The rustic decor and truly wholesome food is perfect for a warm Mother's Day gift, with plenty of heart and soul.

2. The Picnic, Burwood – Cnr Burwood Rd & Park Ave, Burwood

The outdoor garden style dining makes the Picnic Burwood one of my favourite little cafes. The juices here are definitely my favourite, especially on hot days. Everytime I have been the service has been friendly and helpful, not to mention super efficient! I've never had to wait too long for my food. I love the fresh and earthy menu, and wonderful vegetarian and vegan options. The location, however, is what makes it perfect for Mother's day with the kids play park right nearby.

3. Something for Jess – 27 Abercrombie St, Chippendale

A quaint cafe surrounded by a bit of chaos that is Sydney City. Something for Jess is one of my absolute favourite cafes in Sydney with really delicious food and even better hospitality. You must try the fresh pastries here, and the coffee is just fabulous. Maybe it was the fact I was exhausted, but this coffee was so memorable for me. My husband commented that this cafe is the mix of quirky and sleek modern with the exposed granite and rustic wooden furniture. The funky colored decorations make the cafe super homely and inviting. This is a lovely little gem to enjoy your Mother's Day brunch.
