There’s another reason to do the Bondi to Tamarama walk at this time of the year - Sculpture by the Sea. While enjoying coastal scenery and art, you should go for the trifecta and fuel up at some of the many great places to eat and drink close to this year’s outdoor art action.
Salty air, exercise and art viewing is thirsty work, so we have come up with a list of five excellent cafes and restaurants that can help you carb load before the walk, during the walk and after you’re done too! So what are you waiting for? You have until November 7 to check it out!
You can’t get much closer to the beach (and to the sculptures) than this beachside kiosk located right on the coastal walkway at Tamarama Beach.
Tamarama Beach Kiosk is everything you would expect from a beach cafe, and a little bit more. Here you’ll find coffee, tea, smoothies, juices, hot chocolate, breakfasts, and light meals in a casual, relaxed beachy setting.
What might surprise you is the architect-designed kiosk building (kind of a sculpture in itself) and the setting. The cafe deck is nestled into a low cliff on the southern side of the inlet: the outdoor tables and umbrellas stretch along one side of the coastal path, below a natural cliff formation. And the other bonus is that you can have a proper drink. The kiosk is licensed and nicely placed for an afternoon beverage in the sun.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Breakfast burger ($8)
What more could you want from a cafe? M Deli is a quintessential seaside cafe: indoor and outdoor seating, busy but relaxed with interesting food, all the drinks and great coffee. It is understated but with a subtle, elegant edge: a place for locals, walkers and the odd celebrity or three.
M Deli is a short walk up the hill from Tamarama Beach and worth the effort: a friendly cafe serving fabulous coffee and food, all made in-house.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Build your own lunch bowl ($22, large)
It’s all about the coffee at Chapter One! And the cocktails. Oh, and the fresh and enticing food – like the breakfast fruit bowl or the smoked trout and poached egg. And the location above Bondi Beach too of course.
Chapter One describes itself as a “funky space with water views serving specialty coffee and café staples, plus wine at night”. And that’s exactly what it is: a great relaxed place for breakfast and coffee in the morning, or a cocktail or glass of wine in the evening. Maybe you could do all of the above, with a walk to Tamarama for a bit of thought provoking art in between.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Trufflecado ($14.50)
The Crabbe Hole is located right at the beginning (or end – depending on which way you are going) of the Bondi Beach to Tamarama Coastal Walk.
If you are looking for a coffee (Little Marionette blend) and a great coastal view, this is your place.
The cafe is at the famous Bondi Icebergs Club, with views of the swimming pools, the beach, and the ocean beyond. Snag a table, rest your feet, sit back on the deck and enjoy the view!
Dish Cult’s top pick: Chook toastie ($12)
Chocolate cake, crumpets, brekkie rolls and wraps, oh my! There are many reasons to wander the back streets of Bondi before or after your Sculpture by the Sea stroll, and Gertrude and Alice is a really good one.
The bookstore and cafe is a calm oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Bondi Beach, and is something of an institution. Stop by, cosy up with a good book and treat yourself to a simple ham and cheese croissant or a sweet treat from the display fridge. The coffee’s good too, as you’d expect!
Dish Cult’s top pick: Crumpets from heaven – homemade, wholefood, fermented crumpets served with butter and drizzled with honey ($6)
