This place is in the North Shore area of Auckland, named after a local man who was an Elephant wrestler in the early 20th century. It’s a restaurant with a heart, and delivers a down to earth hospitality experience with a relaxed atmosphere, a massive selection of beers, wines, and so much more, and amazing food that anyone in the family will love. If the kids are playing up, this place has a specially designed menu for children, choose from chicken, fish n chips, cheeseburger, or go straight for the sugar rush inducing desserts. No judgement from us if you order an extra lil’ something for the “kids”. Plus if you’re in a bit of a rush, their express menu is perfect for when you just need to head straight home with the kids.

The kids are on their best behaviour, you’re all scrubbed up, and you don’t want to go to the local burger place this time. In that case, we would recommend La Fourchette. The contemporary seaside French brasserie offers modern interpretations of your fave French dishes. With New Zealand’s Best Dining proclaiming that “La Fourchette’s menu is aimed to please everyone”, all the family will be pleased. There’s a separate kids menu if you’re that way inclined, and if you’re coming for dinner on a Sunday, kids eat free! The grown ups can choose between pepper squid, beef tartare, and snails, make the kids squeal! You’re bound to have a great time here, the service is exceptional, and the food is delicious. Franc’s Bar and Eatery is the laid back local loved by all. It’s cool, casual feel makes it a great fit for all and the closest you’ll get to Takapuna beach without getting sand on your feet. Here we have the Banh Mi, tasty and delicious, filled with pulled pork, coriander, spring onion, apple, and with a Kimchi dressing. This Bahn Mi will be a hit with you, and any adventurous child. Kids can choose their own food, with dishes ranging from a green bowl (keep em’ healthy) to the DFC chicken burger (bribe them), and all the treats.

Located in the heart of Takapuna is Al Forno, just a short walk from Takapuna beach and close to the movie theatres, there’s somewhere you might get some delicious crowd-pleasing Italian food. The menu has everything from Lasagne to their signature pizzas cooked in their wood fired oven. If you’re in need of a glass of something, this place has an excellent selection of New Zealand, Australian, and Italian beers and wines. Finish off your meal with a classic espresso coffee to help you muster up the energy to get the kids back home.
