One of Sydney’s most colourful neighbourhoods doesn’t pull any dining punches

Redfern has long been one of the city’s most exciting inner-city neighbourhoods, full of trendy new bars and hipster eateries. A ‘burb roaring with a heavy arts scene and hip, retro vibe, it’s no wonder that it’s one of the major ‘it’ places to be seen eating and drinking at. With such a myriad of things to see and do, the dining scene in Redfern reflects the same heart and soul with a wide variety of cuisines to get your chow on. Here are some of our favourite places to grab a great feed in good ol’ Redfern.

RaRa Ramen
cuisinesRamen, Japanese

All foodie neighbourhoods sport a good ramen place, and RaRa is Redfern’s. Uber popular and a noods destination for Japanese-food lovers city-wide, this trendy noodle spot serves up authentic hand-crafted bowls of ramen, with springy noodles soaking in steaming hot and super-rich broth. The facade of this joint is modern and contemporary, with brick wall linings and a minimalist interior complete with neon signs and bar seats where you can watch the magic come to life.

Order up a bowl of RaRa Tonkotsu for their speciality pork broth with shio tare, thin hakata-style noodles, and free-range ajutsuke tamago seasoned egg. Chicken options come in their Tori Paitan (the chicken cousin of the Tonkotsu), and spicy pork in their Pork Tantamen, a Sichuan based nutty sesame broth.

Kepos Street Kitchen
cuisinesMediterranean

The perfect spot for you to grab a bite whether it’s for brekkie, lunch, or dinner, Kepos Street Kitchen is massively popular and ever-buzzing for good reason. Cafe classics get a rustic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-inspired twist on them, and this classy little bistro serves them up in such an aesthetically pleasing way, you’ll almost never want to visit regular brunch haunts again.

Helmed by award-winning chef Michael Rantissi, the Israeli-inspired menu here will see you munching away on shakshuka with white tahini and pita bread, Kepos benedict served with asparagus, black tahini and wilted cavolo nero, and Moroccan lamb cigar with goats cheese and poached eggs. Heavier options include falafel pita, meatball subs, rump steaks, and salted caramel churros for dessert.

Do yourself a favour and get the Kepos benedict when you’re there.

BUSH
cuisinesAustralia

Sydney-born head chef Grant Lawn has put together a perfect menu showcasing and revolving around the concept of bringing Australia’s bush (hence the name) right to the forefront of Sydney’s dining scene. Inspired by a passion to make a positive difference in the community, BUSH looks and feels just like a really well-decorated nook in the wall – one that you’d love to keep eating at thanks to their appealing menu.

Here you’ll get fried wild rabbit served with boney gravy, wattle seed damper, and hot honey, as well as Kangaroo loin steak with tail kroket and a roo jus. Other non-outback options include corn and mussels, macadamia and mushroom cannelloni, and smoked eel pikelet. Take your meal outdoors on their patio and enjoy the breeze with your really Australian meal.

Huxtaburger
cuisinesBurgers

This is one of Melbourne’s hottest burger joints, and now we’ve finally got it too – right on the streets of our very own Redfern. These gourmet burgers in Huxtaburger made a huge splash in Melbs and for good reason, these burgers are simple goodness, all juicy beef patties, crispy bacon, and buttery, fluffy buns.

Throwing it back to the classics and reinventing the traditional American fast-food burg, their beef burgers come with perfectly seared grass-fed flavour and are topped with the likes of egg, grilled onion, and bacon. Try their chicken burgers on for size, and you’ll be rewarded with satisfyingly crunch chooks with ranch slaw and pickles. They’ve even got vegan and plant-based options if you’re not a meat fan, so vegans and vegetarians rejoice!

Misfits
cuisinesBar

Stylish and sleek, gorgeously outfitted Misfits looks nothing like an actual dining misfit, rather it looks perfectly at home – not a strand of hair out of place. This 200-seater retro resto and bar has the vibes of a good ol’ fashioned bistro in the roarings ‘70s, and serves up tons of great alcohol to go with their not-so-pub classic fare.

On the menu, you’ll find sloppy joe and crumbed portobello mushroom burgers, roast pumpkin salad mains, smoked cauliflower and onion risotto, and comfort food chicken parmis and schnittys. Frequented about just as often for their food as they are for their drink, this old-school glam joint is the perfect place to grab a bite and a friendly wino or cocktail, and they’ve got a whole list of full-flavoured whites, fizzies, and savoury reds to match.
