Scotland has a reputation for offering some of the finest produce in the world and its seafood is a source of international envy. While the North Sea is fairly inhospitable to humans, it’s a veritable paradise for sea creatures. As a result, the langoustines, hand-dived scallops, prawns, crab, mussels, lobsters and fish caught in its waters are juicy and filled with flavour. Many a catch ends up overseas. However, the best native restaurants take advantage of this incredible bounty, working with suppliers to ensure the freshest and most sustainable ingredients make their way into Edinburgh’s top restaurants. These are our favourite spots in the city, to indulge in some nutritious and delicious ocean fare.

The award-winning restaurant is found in the beating heart of the Old Town (its first-floor setting provides impressive views) and has its own elegant oyster bar. Much of the fresh seafood is sourced from the nearby East Coast of Scotland and includes charred scallops, steamed shetland mussels, native lobster, cod and spiced monkfish. And the two house special sharing platters are simply made for date nights; choose from fruits of the sea over crushed ice, or roast shellfish with white wine, parsley and garlic broth. If you’re visiting with a committed carnivore, you can still enjoy an afternoon or evening at Ondine. The restaurant also has a selection of grilled meat cuts from hand-picked British suppliers.
