Want some local advice on the best places to eat and drink? You’ve come to the right place!

For our first Eat Like a Local of 2023, we went to someone who has worked in Glebe for more than twenty years, a local who knows how food can feed the soul, and where to find some foodie comfort! Lee Burns is a clinical psychotherapist with a practice located in the heart of Glebe, an inner-city Sydney locale worthy of closer investigation.

Outside of her busy psychotherapy work, Lee makes sure that she enjoys the good things in life, including wining and dining, reading, theatre, painting, and singing in not one but two choirs: Bondi Sings and the Wooltones. Appreciating the good things in life, that’s what we do at Dish Cult, and here are some ideas to kick off the new year …

Where do you go for your morning coffee?

Cafe Bariloche. If you go there you have to try their pies. They sell out in no time. It’s a little bakery, really mainly frequented by locals. They have the best pies and best empanadas in Australia! And I love their coffee.”

Where would you go for a fast lunch?

“There are lots of contenders. Tom-Yum Tum-Gang is definitely worthy of a mention. It is cheap, quick and has great food. If I have the time I go up there for lunch. Sappho Books, Cafe & Bar is also great.”

You’ll find me shopping for food at…

“There’s an IGA on Glebe Point Road with a great variety of health foods: terrific health food products and a generally great variety of foods. There are two IGAs and this one is the little IGA but a very good one. The one closest to Bridge Road.”

A cheap and cheerful spot is…

“There’s a good Japanese place and Polish, but my pick is Pho Hanoi Pho, a funny hole-in-the-wall place. The food is really good and really cheap. It’s a standard take away. The pho is fantastic. The chicken pho is really yummy.”

Where’s the best brunch with friends?

Esca for contemporary Australian food in a family run restaurant. You’ll find it towards the harbour end of Glebe Point Road.”

I’d take someone to dinner at…

Glebe Point Diner for modern Australian food. Great food. Friendly staff. The steak’s great, the fish is good and last time I dined there the risotto was a standout. Superb wine. It’s a nice modern environment with a verandah out the front and impressive decor.”

Glebe’s secret gem is…

“The French bistro-style Bellevue Cottage By Antoine: a charming building, with a great view. You can look over the verandah to the Glebe end of the harbour. It’s a place for lunch, brunch or dinner. I don’t drink a lot but the wine list is interesting. The food is really lovely and the service warm and friendly.”

Glebe is a great place to eat because…

“It has so many cafes and restaurants, particularly along Glebe Point Road. It’s a place where you are spoilt for choice. It has a wonderful mix of multicultural cafes and restaurants. Just a whole lot of different cuisines and different nationalities: Polish, Belgian, Spanish, Asian food … you name it. There are so many different types of restaurants and great bakeries as well. There is also one of the best Lebanese restaurants in Sydney [Hannibal Lebanese Restaurant]. And then add nearby places like Forest Lodge where there is the Tramsheds with something like eleven restaurants in the historic former tram depot.

For me, it’s a great place to have people combine seeing me and having lunch or dinner or coffee: a comfort factor and a treat after a counselling session.”
