Spotlight on Mother India in Glasgow

Since arriving on the Scottish scene in 1990 with its commitment to homestyle ‘Desi’ cuisine, the name Mother India has become synonymous with quality Indian sub-continental food. This has been achieved by a commitment to using the best local produce, fresh herbs and carefully selected whole spices. Some Glaswegians believe the Finnieston restaurant serves the best curry in the city, and we believe that could be the case too…

Legendary

Mother India is a Glasgow icon, renowned for its exceptional, flavoursome Indian cuisine. Since opening its doors in 1990, the ethos has been based upon a simple idea of authentic Indian home cooking served in the warmth and comfort of a restaurant environment.

The restaurant has since gone onto become globally renowned, regularly featuring in prominent good food guides. It was also visited by the legendary American chef and journalist, Anthony Bourdain!

Celebrity status

Bourdain wasn’t the only celebrity to pass through the doors of Mother India. A slew of famous faces has sat down to dine here, Lewis Capaldi being one of the most recent.

During an appearance on Absolute Radio, the singer-songwriter was asked to reveal the name of some of his Whatsapp group chat names.

Among them was one named ‘Curry Boys’, where he and his friends organise curry nights, and it seems the West End restaurant is a favourite of the “Someone You Loved” singer.

Lewis said: “Mother India in Scotland, Glasgow – best curry you’ll ever have.”

Food

The food from Chef Amar Kumar Maurya is definitely the star of the show. His dishes are clever and original, and bursting with flavours.

Among the starters, the Ginger, Crab and Prawn Dosa is spectacular, while the Spice Haddock and Roasted Tomatoes is another crowd pleaser.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to the mains, with seafood, chicken and lamb options all available. There’s also a dedicated vegetarian section too.

Smeena’s Slow Cooked Chicken Curry is comforting and delicious, while the King Prawn and Monkfish with Ginger and Dill really has to be tried to be believed!

Labour of love

Mother India is a labour of love, first opened by Monir and Smeena Mohammed. Their ongoing ambition is to provide the best of Indian sub-continental food at affordable prices, and they work extremely hard to maintain and constantly improve upon these standards.

The bar was set high very early on and the team has maintained that elite status. Is Mother India’s curry the best in Glasgow? We definitely think so!
