Revenge is a dish best served cold, and we’re committed to taking our power back this lockdown by indulging in some of the lushest desserts NSW has to offer.
With an abundance of iconic restaurants, cafés, and hole in the wall eateries on the local food scene we’re honing in on a select few that have staked their claim on arguably the most important meal of the day: dessert.
Touted as the world’s most Instagrammed cake, Black Star Pastry’s signature dish, the Strawberry Watermelon Cake lives up to its hype. A layered tower of deliciousness, it’s light, creamy, and aesthetically pleasing to boot. Bonus: it’s the best possible kind of gluten-free awesomeness for diners who might usually find themselves at a culinary disadvantage.
The Milk Bar By Cafeish is the perfect antidote for a tough day in lockdown and beyond. Their dessert menu is to die for, featuring decadent monstrosities like loaded doughnuts sprinkled with M&Ms, nuts, fruit loops, and crushed Oreos.
Need something to wash it down? Try one of their milkshakes topped with a mountain of cream, syrup, and sprinkles. Pro tip: Come hungry to take full advantage, or head home defeated and live to regret it.
The product of three generations of gelato makers, Cremeria De Luca is THE premier spot for ice cream since 1937. They use cutting edge tech like custom insulated pots designed to maintain consistent -12°C temps for their creations. A small price to pay to pull off their signature product: the gelato burger.
It’s a much loved Italian creation so tradition is key here and we highly recommend you try this ice cream sandwich to end all ice cream sandwiches, with the gelato of your choice sandwiched between two halves of a scrumptious brioche bun. Fun fact: if you like a challenge, or an alternative for your next birthday celebration, it’s also available as a cake (pictured)!!
Uncle Tetsu‘s Japanese Cheesecakes are legendary among Sydney-siders. So much so that at one point the store had to impose a “one cake per person” limit on purchases. If that’s not enough to convince you to give it a go, what gives?
Rumour has it every cake is a soft, fluffy icon in its own right, and a true testament to the chefs’ craftsmanship.
Speedos is a Sydney institution, and for good reason: their signature dish, caramelised banana and chai vegan pancakes, draws crowds – and if you’re lucky enough to have tried them already, you know they’re worth moving mountains for.
Luckily for you, the cafe is only a short stroll from the beach if you’re heading out for exercise in the Eastern suburbs. And vegan or not, you’re in for a real treat. Our advice: Go forth and feast!!
