An intimate restaurant tucked away in the Bank Square area of Belfast city centre, Havana Bank Square is an exciting restaurant that brings a touch of old style Cuba to the Northern Irish capital.
Although located in the heart of Belfast, at the entrance to the Gaeltacht Quarter, Havana Bank Square is anything but your boring traditional eatery. As the name suggests, taking inspiration from Latin America, this restaurant is adorned with bold patterns, exposed brick, mood lighting and dark rich colours. When outside exploring the neighbouring St Mary’s Church or the array of historic Irish pubs, it’s hard to believe this exotic restaurant is located just next door.
Although classically Cuban inside, the menu at Havana Bank Square offers the perfect mix of exotic flavours and classic favourites that utilise local produce. To start, guests can choose between classics including soup of the day and scallops with ‘nduja or the more unusual, crispy togarashi squid and salt and chilli beef. This same variety continues into the restaurant’s main menu with a selection of unique burgers, fish dishes and even crispy pork belly served with a hoisin jus.
What stands out on the main menu however, and proves a favourite with visitors, is Havana Bank Square’s 6oz flat iron steak. The steak dish is prepared to perfection and served alongside all the traditional accompaniments as well as bone marrow potato presse and decadent red wine jus. If you still feel you have space, this Belfast eatery also has a range of sweet and savoury desserts to perfectly round off any meal.
Havana Bank Square has become a must visit, particularly for those in the vegan community, due to its thorough plant-based menu. If you are vegan yourself or visiting with a vegan friend, this city centre spot is sure to exceed expectations with completely unique and enticing dishes, different from the typical options many have come to expect. With a choice of three starter options, plant-based diners will struggle to choose between Korean cauliflower wings, crispy tofu mushroom dumplings or the famous watermelon sashimi, which is served alongside nori fried rice and a tahini vinaigrette.
The drama continues into Havana Bank Square’s dinner plates, with a selection of two completely unique burgers, a mushroom seitan burger or crispy cauliflower burger, both served alongside specific dressings and a side of fries. If burgers aren’t your thing, there is the option of salt baked celeriac with charred broccoli salsa verde and topped with crispy hasselback potatoes. Being incredibly mindful of vegan dinners, Havana Bank Square also offers vegan desserts, wines and has very helpful and knowledgeable staff, ready to answer any questions you may have and will make everyone feel at ease.
The perfect compliment to any meal is a perfectly poured cocktail and this is exactly what you can expect at Havana Bank Square. Although guests have a selection of wine pairings, beers and spirits, it’s the tipples from the cocktail menu that make a regular appearance on social pages. The menu is filled with a number of recognisable classics such as fruity French martinis and cosmopolitans alongside the more zingy margaritas and whisky sours. A local favourite, however, is the in-house espresso martini that is flavoured with hazelnut, making this already moreish cocktail even more decadent.
If the food and drinks aren’t enough to draw you to this city centre venue, maybe the date night special will. Monday through Thursday, between 5pm and 9pm, you can enjoy a delicious three course meal with two cocktails or a bottle of wine for just £60 per couple.
Although operating a reduced menu for the date night deal, guests can still enjoy a number of the restaurant’s classic favourites at a reduced price. To start you have the choice of five varied starters, which includes Korean fried chicken wings, crispy squid and vegetarian mushroom wontons. For mains you again have the choice of five dishes, which includes all the burgers and fish dishes, as well as the flat iron ensuring you can sample all the best bits the main menu has to offer. To finish you have the choice of three desserts with sweet and savoury options to meet everyone’s taste.
