Best Restaurants and Pubs for Autumn
The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing colour, and the evenings are getting darker: Autumn is fast approaching! Don’t despair, the change in season brings along with it plenty of reasons to celebrate – not least the opportunity to indulge in some seriously delicious comfort food. Keep reading to find out our top picks for Autumn eats in Glasgow.
For some super cosy vibes, head to Glasgow’s trendiest neighbourhood where you’ll find The Finnieston – a small restaurant specialising in locally sourced food and drink. Perfect for an autumn afternoon lunch or dinner, the interiors are warm and inviting – all wood panelling and low lighting, and the food packs a real punch. Beer Battered North Sea Haddock is served alongside hand-cut chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce, and the Iberico Secreto Steak (with smoked butter and rosemary) is seriously indulgent. For big dishes with big flavours, served in an intimate setting, look no further.
Another Finnieston classic – Porter and Rye have been serving up delectable roast dinners now for quite some time. Take a breezy walk through Kelvingrove Grove park, before tucking into Porter and Rye’s famous Roast Beef dinner – complete with braised ox cheek, bone marrow gravy, beef dripping Yorkshire puddings and more. The food isn’t cheap: the roasts, which run each Sunday from 12pm to 5pm, will set you back £25 per person, but we promise you it’s worth it. Nothing screams autumn more than a roast dinner, and Porter and Rye have one of the finest the city has to offer.
Anyone who’s sampled a ramen will know just how restorative and warming they can be. Head to Ramen Dayo on bustling Ashton Lane, where you’ll be greeted with a small, wooden-panelled dining area, cosy booths and delightful aromas that descend the stairs as you enter the restaurant. Their rich Tonkotsu broth forms the basis of most of their ramens, and topped with burnt garlic oil, mushrooms, pickled ginger and bean sprouts – you’ll be hard pressed to find an indulgence like it anywhere else. Prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly. Finish your meal with a cup of jasmine tea and soak up the cosy surroundings.
Expect more than simple ‘Pub Grub’ from The Drake. Here you’ll find refined takes on all of your well-loved comfort meals. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming (we love the huge fireplaces) and it’s super kid-friendly. Their triple cooked chips are something to behold, and the Shepherd’s Pie (served with smoked lamb fat mash) will certainly give you enough subsistence to embrace the Scottish autumnal weather.
When it’s cold and dark outside it takes all of our resilience not to face-plant into a bowl of pasta! That’s exactly what we’ll be doing this autumn at La Lanterna, however. Their menu follows the seasons and showcases the best produce Scotland has to offer. The Pasta e Fagioli is the perfect dish for any non-meat eaters to indulge in some comfort food: a warming borlotti bean soup with garlic, rosemary and olive oil. Equally pleasing is their Ravioli Granchio – crab filled ravioli in a lobster claw meat sauce with fresh dill. Yum!
