Christmas is coming! It’s almost that time of year and at ResDiary we’re very very excited. We’ve decked the halls with boughs of holly, we’re singing carols, and booking all our favourite restaurants with the best Christmas menus.

The home of authentic stonegrill meats (hence the name), you can grill your own food on a slab of stone. However, we’re here for the Christmas menu. Their set Christmas dinner is priced at $52.50 and is available for big groups, it’s made for the office party or for all your bestest friends to sort out secret santa. On the menu, there’s juicy prawns in the form of their “Prawn three way”, served with tequila and lime aioli on a guacamole salad. Then you can pick from pork belly, chicken, salmon, feta and mushroom filo, or the standout Yorkshire Hereford sirloin served with yorkshire pudding with veggies, crackling and a roast garlic jus. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, they have you covered there too. From strawberry romanoff to chocolate mousse cake, you’ll find something you love. Wash it all down with one of their cocktails, delicious.

Located in Christchurch Casino, Chi Kitchen will transport you to the streets of Guangzhou, a sprawling port city northwest of Honk Kong. The Cantonese inspired menu focuses on noodles, dumplings and stir-fries straight from the wok. The team of chefs have been inspired by Stanley Mo, who has worked in some of the best restaurants in China and Hong Kong. If you’re heading here for a Christmas feast, you’re in for a treat. You need to try the “Chef’s Banquet”, it’s a set menu priced at $30 per person, for a minimum of 4 people, but it’s totally worth it. To start, you’ll be treated to some wontons, then a warming chicken and corn soup, after which you’ll get a selection of main dishes and some rice. All of which you can finish with some Chinese tea. Cheers to that! Or as they say in Cantonese, dry the cup to that!

Aikmans is located in the heart of the popular Merivale Suburb of Christchurch. Serving great food since 1992, it’s cosy interior and well covered courtyard make this the perfect spot for food all year round. But it’s Christmas we’re really excited about, they have two Christmas menus, the set menu and the buffet menu. You can go for the two courses for $50 or the three course menu for $60 (we’d advise going for all three, save room…). We like the sound of the chicken and roast artichoke terrine, truffle mayo, and date and walnut bread. Then we’d go for the classic turkey. Here they’re serving a turkey ballentine with sage and onion, alongside potato gratin and smoked bacon jus. Desserts are just as delicious, the whole table will get a platter including eton mess, rum and raisin mousse, poached fruits, and butterscotch ice cream. If you do fancy the buffet option, you’ll get to choose from four types of meat from the carvery, seven salads, and four desserts. Get booking!

Bloody Mary’s
cuisinesModern New Zealand

Christchurch’s premier steakhouse serves the best quality produce. They take the freshest ingredients from one of the purest places on earth and make it simply delicious. Their canterbury feast menu is not to be missed. Start classy with oysters or salmon. Then choose from lamb, chicken, and canterbury angus beef sirloin for your main. Dessert knocks it out of the park with their pavlova, crumble, or (our favourite) their profiteroles (YES!). One reviewer commented: “This was our first time in 40 years to have a Christmas away from home. We wanted to have something a bit special to remember our time in Christchurch and Bloody Mary’s did not disappoint. The food was fantastic. The service balanced attention with allowing us to enjoy our meal.” It’s not to be missed.
