Where to take the kids out to eat in Bristol
Perhaps we’re showing our age here, but a favourite childhood dish of ours is a good plate of sausages! Which is why we’re taking you to The Clifton Sausage! With a range of tasty, homemade meals available, it’s one of our favourite child-friendly restaurants in Bristol. Choose from old spot sausages, veggie sausages, fish fingers and more, and get a scoop of vanilla ice cream to finish off. There’s a great selection of classic British dishes too, making it a great place for the whole family.
If you’re looking to go somewhere a bit more classy with your little ones, we recommend going to The Ox. Famous for its delicious meats, cooked on a Josper grill, adults can tuck into dishes like a 300oz T-Bone sharing steak, or a half rack of hickory smoked ribs. Meanwhile, the children get their own menu with a whole roast ribeye just for themselves on Sundays. There’s also the more traditional mac and cheese, and burgers if they’re not huge on steaks.
Everyone loves a pie, even little kids, so we’re bringing you to the absolute king of the shortcrusts – Pieminister. This place serves up all types of delights, with vegan pies, meat pies, and everything in between. For the little guys there’s mac n cheese, fish pie, cottage pie, or sausage and mash, and a soft serve ice cream to round things off. However, they might not be happy with that when they see the adults’ soft scoop sundaes featuring an apple pie concoction, mud pie, and much more!
No matter who you are, everyone likes a freebie. Which is why Bambalan is perfect if you’re looking for child-friendly restaurants in Bristol as kids eat free Monday-Friday. They can choose from pizza, burgers, meatballs or fish fingers, and round it all off with an ice cream. Adults get an even better choice of burgers, “babs” and mezze dishes, all served up in fun, relaxed surroundings.
Artist Residence is one of the most must-visit places in Bristol; we love it for the creative interior and convenient location. Even though the restaurant is situated in the heart of Bristol, its Georgian townhouse style gives you a sense of novelty and allows you to escape the bustle of the city. It’s the perfect destination if you’re planning a family day out but don’t want to travel far. You can book in for a filling breakfast, which features croissants, sourdough bread, waffles and classics such as the Full English Breakfast. For lunch and dinner, you have a choice of several starters and mains. For example, there’s an 8oz sirloin steak with fries, mixed leaves and garlic butter currently on the menu that’s out of this world. Although there are no options specifically for little ones, they’ll be pleased with the sides: fries, crispy potatoes, truffle and parmesan, and mini chorizo.
Farrington Park is a breath of fresh air, quite literally. Located in the countryside, it gives you an opportunity to have a break from your daily life and relax whilst surrounded by the lovely green scenery. It’s a perfect location for a family day out; you can dine in chic yet casual surroundings and enjoy some quality time together. The menu will suit anyone’s needs with British dishes that celebrate local produce and come in generous portion sizes (think Chicken Milanese & Truffle Dressing with Creamed Spinach and Fried Burford Brown Egg). There’s also a selection of meals for children. The choice of fish fingers, linguine pasta, grilled sausages and chicken nuggets will make the dinner a real success for them. Sit back, savour the food, and enjoy the stunning views over the golf course. Make sure you take advantage of the patio when the weather’s warm and sunny.
If you fancy treating yourself to a dinner in an elegant setting, there’s no better choice than Cosy Club. Once a church, now one of the most popular dining spots in Bristol, the restaurant is well known thanks to its Instagrammable interior: the Neo-Palladian decor with marble flooring, beautiful stone work and a domed roof. You’re welcome to bring your children along and enjoy a delicious menu. Parents might want to try the sharing plates (such as pork belly bites or mozzarella & ricotta arancini), and pair them with one of the mains such as roasted fillet of salmon. The kids’ menu has plenty of mains to choose from, all including a drink. For example, spaghetti and meatballs, macaroni and cheese, fish fingers or a burger. The dessert is something you can’t miss, especially the miso caramel custard.
Flour & Ash is a family-friendly restaurant where you can enjoy fresh, wood-fired sourdough pizzas that will cater to anyone’s taste. You can have one of the classics (nothing beats Margherita with parmesan and fresh basil) or try the guest pizza, which at the time of writing was the Seven Lucky Gods with spicy Korean chicken, tomato, fior di latte, kewpie, spring onion and roasted sesame seeds. The kids’ menu has a set price and includes juice, pizza, and soft-serve vanilla ice cream. However, kids can eat for free from Monday to Friday between 12 and 5pm. The venue is a retro space where you can relax on comfortable sofas and enjoy time with your family. Don’t be ashamed to take Instagram-worthy photos to capture the moment; given how gorgeous the interior is, you won’t be the only one.
The Greenbank is a community pub that attracts locals thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and the delicious Sunday roast. If you’re looking for a friendly place where you can have comfort food and share a laugh with your family, this is just the right spot. The menu highlights are the stone-baked pizzas boasting classics such as Margherita and more unique options like Roquito Pepper with artichoke, and goat cheese. We recommend you to get two different ones and share. There are also delicious burgers, gluten-free mains and a kids’ menu including tomato pasta, chicken goujons, beef burger and pizzas. The grown-ups can wash their meal down with a pint, straight from the local breweries, and children can enjoy a soft drink. Oh, and when we say it’s family-friendly, we mean that no one gets left behind so your dogs can join you too! Perfect for a casual day out.
The Gallimaufry is a quirky space on the Gloucester Road, famous for its upbeat atmosphere and daily live music events. The children will like it for the colourful art (the ceiling is something else), and parents will appreciate the locally sourced ales. The menu is a mix of dishes from different cuisines, presented so nicely they look like art too. For example, you can try the pineapple kimchi and tofu pokebowl, galli buns, and local pork sausage and buttered mash. There’s no menu specifically for children, however, some sides might be up to their liking: patatas bravas, buttermilk fried chicken and chunky chips are quite popular. After dinner, don’t forget to sample the desserts. The sticky date pudding is especially delicious with vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce. The venue is vibrant and the staff always happy to help.
