Proudly Nepalese

Monty’s is a traditional and authentic Nepalese restaurant, owned by husband and wife team Shiva and Lina Gautam. Often mistaken for being an Indian restaurant, the owners and their cuisine is proudly Nepalese all the way through, cooked and served by Nepalese as well.

Authentic dishes

Monty’s of Kathmandu opened its doors to the public, very quietly, without any fanfare, on a wet September evening in 1997. But, after over 25 years of serving great Nepalese food to the Irish public, as well as visitors from abroad, the team and its restaurant is now very much part of Dublin’s fantastic dining scene.

The focus is to source quality raw ingredients and prepare all dishes in-house, taking no short cuts and always serving high-quality Nepalese food. The kitchen staff uses a traditional charcoal tandoor to give that smoky taste to their barbecued dishes and to their very famous nan breads.

Menu

The menu boasts family recipes, which are hugely popular with Dubliners. After all, who doesn’t love a home-cooked meal made with aged-old, tried and tested recipes that have stood the test of time?

There are several starters lovingly created by Lina, which still bear her name: Lina’s Bhyanta Ko Bharta, Lina’s Aloo Jhinga Chat and Lina’s Deconstructed Veg Samosa Chat to name a few.

From the mains, too, is Lina’s legendary creations – most famously Lina’s Maccha Ko Tarkari and Lina’s Chicken Achari.

If you’re vegetarian, you’ll be spoiled for choice too. The Aloo Tama Pidalo is wonderful, while the Kerau Paneer is also delicious.

Wine

The Monty’s team want to offer wines that suit their cuisine and take great joy in presenting wines that would be new (or at least less familiar) to many people, such as Grüner Veltliner from Austria, Carménère from Chile, the Douro wines of Portugal, and some interesting wines from some of the nearest neighbours in England.

There’s a large selection of wines by the glass, using the ‘Le Verre de Vin’ wine preservation system, and a smaller selection of premium wines using the Coravin system, which are changed on a monthly basis.

If you’re the designated driver for the night, fear not because there are some fantastic non-alcoholic wines. These are good for your waistline too, with 50 per cent fewer calories than the average plonk!

In the two and a half decades they’ve been operating, Shiva and Lina have established themselves firmly in Dublin’s dining out scene, with Monty’s becoming not just an award-winning, traditional and authentic Nepalese restaurant, but one that’s close to a lot of people’s hearts – ours included.
