A spotlight on Bristol's Caper and Cure

Bang in the centre of Bristol, you’ll find Caper and Cure; a casual and contemporary bistro serving up traditional European and British plates with a refined twist. With a warm inviting aura, and a beaconing storefront showcasing the buzz inside, it’s hard to not catch your eye as you walk down the high street.

The blue and gold colour palette offers an eccentric sense of taste, and Caper and Cure manages to effortlessly pull it off. The building was originally an old chemist dating back to the twenties – but, now the structure is adorned with fairy lights and plush leather upholstery, ready to comfort you for the next hour or two. The walls are taken up with maps of the UK highlighting where the kitchen has locally-sourced their ingredients, as well as dozens of mini pot plants dotted around the shelves. If you’re trying to picture it, think wine bar chic.

But, it is the food we’re all here for after all. The menus are seasonal, with a specials board, the Sunday roast, and puddings all change weekly. To get a taste of what you’ll find on their lunch and dinner a la carte menu during your visit, imagine the likes of cadiz boquerones (marinated anchovies), chorizo croquettes, Devon scallops with cafe de Paris butter, warm crab butter with sourdough, Hereford beef tartare with homemade crisps, orange and gin cured red mullet, and confit celeriac – and that’s just for starters!

The mains are the star of the show, with recent menu additions including confit duck leg with French lentils, pan-fried potato gnocchi with wild garlic, garden peas, & goats cheese, Onglet steak with bearnaise, a braised pork belly with celeriac remoulade, stewed apples, & pomme terrine, and duck breast with parsnip purée, blackberries, & broccoli. Whilst normally traditional British dishes, the plates come out in a magnificent manor, like artwork on the plate, with just enough of each flavour to create a winning combo during each forkful. The meat is tender, the seafood is fresh, and each vegetable is treated very carefully to bring out its best flavours.

As for pudding – it is a quintessential British bistro, so you know they’ve got some of the best heartwarming desserts around. Think chocolate delice with a blood orange sorbet, Vanilla panna cotta and rhubarb, apple tart tatin with a creme fraiche ice cream, pistachio crème brulée with a shortbread crumb. Otherwise, if a savoury ending is more to your taste, you can’t go wrong with their selection of locally sourced cheeses for a build-your-own cheeseboard.

If you’re around for a weekend, you simply have to stay for Caper and Cure’s Sunday roasts. Opt for some starters along the likes of St Austell mussels with chorizo, & cider, ham and pheasant terrine, or the salt-baked beetroot with burrata, & pickled walnuts, before digging into the main affair.

Though revised weekly, you’ll likely choose between a beef, pork, chicken, and vegetarian option, all dished up with roast potatoes, red cabbage, honey roast carrot, beetroot puree, crushed swede, greens, Yorkshire puddings, and lashings of dark, rich gravy. This truly is the ultimate Sunday roast. Served from 12-5 on a Sunday, you’ll want to book to secure your plate.

The wine list remains as equally impressive as the a la carte menus. Offering a selection of well over 60 wines from across the globe, spanning from Italy, Greece, and Spain all the way to Australia and New Zealand. Each one carefully selected to make the list, Caper and Cure sure do know a thing or two about wine, and are happy to help pair your perfect bottle to your meal.

If you find yourself more inclined to a cocktail, then you’re certainly in luck. Between nailing the classics and offering a range of bespoke tipples, you’ll want to try quite a few off the menu – so why not do just that?

Uniquely special and full of allure, Caper and Cure should be next on your list for a romantic date night at a new spot or a much-needed catch up with friends over some great food. With the added excitement of a new menu every single visit, you’ll be hooked to coming back over and over again to experience the magic.

You’ll find Caper and Cure at 108a Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3RU, just make sure to book ahead to avoid missing out!
