Where to go for mac and cheese in Bristol

We are gathered here to celebrate the phenomenon that is mac and cheese. So simple in ingredients and composition, yet complex, creamy and satisfying on the palette, this dish has been a firm favourite with so many for so long. To honour it, we’ve put together a list of our five favourite Bristol spots to enjoy this cheesy treat – whether it’s served as a main or side dish, these guys all know what they’re doing.

The Stable
cuisinesPizza, British

Although The Stable is perhaps better known for their delightful crispy-based pizzas and extensive range of ciders, these guys have now added a new specialty to their repertoire: mac and cheese! We were pleasantly surprised to discover three versions of this delicious classic lurking on the menu last time we visited their central Harbourside location. With a choice of classic, meaty or veggie, we opted for the Green Light (veggie) and were absolutely delighted to be served a piping hot dish of creamy mac and cheese punctuated with plenty of fresh summer greens – pair with an ice-cold cider and you’re good to go!

The unspoken mac and cheese rule of three continues at our south Bristol star, North Street Standard, with a choice between classic, Truffle Mac (sautéed mushrooms and truffle oil) or Dirty Mac (BBQ pulled pork and BBQ sauce). All perfectly creamy within and crispy on top, simply pick whichever takes your fancy, perhaps paired with a complementing side dish, and then sit back in the no-fuss, laid-back surroundings to enjoy good company and excellent food.

You may already be familiar with the name Brewhouse & Kitchen, with its reputation for stunning beers and substantial grub resonating throughout England’s southwest, but, did you know about its mac and cheese? Made using house craft beer cheese sauce, choose to enjoy this unctuous dish in its purest form, add in a little fire with some jalapeños or bring in a touch of meaty depth with crispy smoked bacon. Add to that a pint of cool, refreshing beer and you’re got yourself a party in your mouth.

Now then, bear with us here… we are well aware of the fact that Pasture is a high-quality steakhouse located conveniently close to Bristol Temple Meads train station and not a place to chow down on a reasonably priced, fabulously rich cheesy pasta dish. However, should you find yourself in the vicinity and able to treat yourself, we must implore you, please order the mac and cheese side! Made with four different cheeses and topped with a crispy bacon crumb, this little pot of gold will compliment and transform your entire meal in a way you wouldn’t believe.

Hub Box Bristol
cuisinesAmerican, Burgers

Beautiful in its simplicity, we’d like to finish this list with another side dish. Located in the social hub that is Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Hub Box Bristol is known primarily for its burgers, but take a closer look and feast your eyes on the side selection and there you’ll find it. No add-ons, no bells, no whistles, just cheesy macaroni goodness to be enjoyed alongside a main of your choice for the perfect accent to your meal.
