Spotlight on Belzan in Liverpool
Whether you’re a student on the lookout for a local or just visiting the south end of the city, you should head to Belzan – the friendly neighbourhood bistro with smiling faces, delicious wine and plenty of rotational seasonal dishes.
Prix Fixe
One of the highlights of eating at Belzan is that your taste buds get to experience a range of recipes depending on the season.
Belzan offers a Prix Fixe menu Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm to 11pm, which includes two courses for £19 or three courses for £26, both of which come with a lovely glass of wine. The standout starter is the roasted courgettes with romesco and sunflower seed gremolata, while the go-to main dish has to be the barbecued beef bavette with tonnato sauce and the crunchiest veg – kohlrabi. After your main, you can enjoy a selection of crackers, and if you have room for dessert, you should definitely try the Italian meringue with strawberries and cream.
Sundays
Belzan is also known for its Sunday service from 12pm to 6pm, which of course offers all the roast dinner fixings. For Sunday lunch, you can opt for two courses for £30 or for an extra £6 you can pig out on dessert. Meat eaters will love the pork belly with kimchi mayo, while veggies can enjoy a fresh cucumber and melon salad with oregano and labneh.
The star of the show is without a doubt the Sunday dinner itself, which includes a diverse range of options: Dickey’s roast corn-fed chicken, roast beef sirloin, spring vegetable pithivier or whole plaice.
You also get all the fixings including roasties, Yorkshire pudding, roasted chantey carrots, and fresh seasonal allotment greens all smothered in Belzan’s delicious homemade gravy. If you manage to finish all of this and have even the smallest space in your stomach, you have to try the burnt basque cheesecake with mascarpone and cherries – the ultimate finisher.
Whether you want to enjoy a quiet hump day meal at Belzan or take the whole family out for Sunday lunch, make sure you book ahead as this quaint little Smithdown restaurant fills up quickly whatever day it is.
