A Peculiar Tea is a new concept restaurant opened in the trendy area of South Belfast. The brain-child of creative chef Gemma Austin, who showed her flair for culinary expertise on series 16 of BBC’s Great British Menu, A Peculiar Tea is like no other restaurant Belfast has ever seen.
Since opening on University Road on 3rd December, with their debut festive menu ‘’Twas the Night Before Christmas’, A Peculiar Tea has quickly proved to be a hit with locals from Belfast and further afield.
As guests gushed at the delicious flavours and inventive menu that was dished up before them, anticipation grew around what Chef Austin would amaze us with next.
Well the big reveal is here and we must say, we’re impressed. Chef Austin has once again shown her creative mind with the launch of A Peculiar Tea’s second six-course tasting menu, focused around the work of children’s author Roald Dahl.
‘The Best of Roald Dahl’ is a delightful six-course tasting menu, with wine pairings available. As with all menus at A Peculiar Tea, the Roald Dahl-themed dining experience will run for a limited time only, from 5th January to 2nd March, so get in quick so you don’t miss out!
Menu items centre around Dahl’s most famous works of children’s fiction, including Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, The Witches, and The Fantastic Mr Fox. As surprise is a huge part of the experience, Chef Austin and her team keep the full details of the menus under wraps, but we can reveal that ingredients include mushroom, chocolate, crab, chicken, peach, and pea.
Aside from the delicious food and creative menu on offer, the restaurant is playfully decorated with accent features to match the menu’s current theme. Guests will be greeted by quotes and props from Willy Wonka, copies of Roald Dahl’s books, and quirky interior details, such as unusual clocks and door handles. Not only that, but each dish is served in a creative and imaginative way that allows diners the chance to embrace their inner child and feel as if they’re visiting Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for themselves.
Chatting about the inspiration behind her creative and inventive concept restaurant, Chef Austin said: “’I don’t want a fancy restaurant… I want to create a wonderland. A place where adults escape the everyday and experience something a little different. Where’s the fun in growing up? We have only started, watch this space.”
