Spotlight on ‘Babs in Glasgow
If you’re looking to elevate your kebab experience then you need to pay a visit to ‘Babs, a modern gourmet kebab house that is located on West Nile Street in the heart of Glasgow City Centre!
Origins
‘Babs is founded by the hugely successful, family-owned Bread Meats Bread business that is responsible for the mouthwatering burgers that emerged onto the food scene in 2012. Following its success, the business decided to venture into a Mediterranean style of cuisine, recognising Glasgow’s great love for a simple yet delicious doner kebab. ‘Babs was born in 2017 offering a ‘grown-up’, sophisticated take on the humble kebab within the modern dining experience.
If you want a Greek, Turkish or Levantine kebab, then you need to take a trip here. This Mediterranean restaurant is committed to using only the best sustainable Scottish produce, so you can be assured that the food is fresh and delicious.
Experience
When you visit ‘Babs, you may feel a sense of deja-vu when it comes to the setting as it has the same laid-back vibe as Bread Meats Bread. There is a mix of both comfortable booths with a marble-style split between the two different levels. The décor will transport you to a sunnier climate away from the Glasgow weather thanks to the beautiful white tiles that feature on both the floor and walls. The main star of the décor is the grand fountain that can be found beside the stairs.
‘Babs’ laid-back vibe is popular with those who want to enjoy delicious street food or nibbles during a shopping visit in town or after work with co-workers. You can expect first-class service and the waiting staff are extremely knowledgeable about the menu offerings, so if you have a query be sure to ask as they will be only too happy to assist you.
The food
‘Babs is keen to make the most of seasonal and ethical produce when creating delicious street food dishes. When it comes to the main event, ‘Babs offers an extensive food menu that is sure to have a dish to suit everyone.
Diners are encouraged to start off their ‘Babs experience by choosing a few little plates to get taste buds excited. Moroccan tagine, prawn saganaki and olives are just a few of these offerings.
‘Babs’ house wraps
The ‘Babs house wraps are highly popular. The lamb doner is wrapped in hot flatbread with shredded lettuce, pickled cabbage, gherkins, and harissa mayo, while the vegan gyros wrap is another popular option. It comes with charcoal grilled ‘this isn’t chicken’ chopped and wrapped inside a Greek flatbread, stuffed with fries, tomatoes, freshly chopped onions and plant-based tzatziki.
Robatta grill plates
For those looking for larger dishes, a range of robatta grill plates is offered with lamb, steak, chicken, and fish options all available. The lamb souvlaki is free-range lamb leg fillet skewers, served on top of a Greek flatbread with tomatoes, chopped onions and paprika-dusted tzatziki. Alternatively, if you prefer a steak option, the sirloin steak shish is 6oz of Scotch sirloin steak mouthwateringly marinated and cubed, then dry-aged and cooked on skewers on a bed of grilled Mediterranean vegetables. Yum.
Healthy and fresh plates
For those looking for a healthy option, ‘Babs has curated a range of couscous and grill plates, which offer a fresh alternative. The charred cauliflower, beetroot and feta couscous can be vegetarian or vegan. If you are a seafood lover, then you should choose the charred seafood and couscous plate. This dish is packed with josper charred king prawns and octopus on a bed of pearl couscous, chargrilled Mediterranean veg, balsamic roasted beetroot, onions and sweet pickles drizzled with feta and pomegranate seeds.
Burgers
A section of the menu is also dedicated to a range of mouthwatering burgers. Choose from a cheeseburger, vegan cheeseburger, and ‘Babs’ legendary beef souvlaki or shawarma burger. The beef souvlaki burger is charcoal grilled and topped with tzatziki, tomatoes, halloumi fries, garlic mayo and onions. Alternatively, the shawarma burger consists of a charcoal grilled beef burger topped with crispy chicken shawarma, harissa mayo, house pickles, American cheese, and chilli sauce.
Why not add a delicious side to your burger? A range of different fries is available including garlic parmesan fries, potato chips, skinny Greek fries, halloumi fries and chicken gyro fries.
Drinks
As well as providing a colourful array of Mediterranean food, ‘Babs also offers an extensive drinks menu packed with cocktails, mocktails, beers and wines. From classic cocktails such as mojitos and Aperol Spritz, you will also find a Greek mojito, which is made from metaxa brandy over ice, mint, lime and sugar.
If you are the designated driver then why not indulge in an Istanbul sunrise mocktail – a fusion of fresh orange juice, pomegranate juice, lemonade and grenadine.
