A New York state of mind at the NY Grill

With the travel time from Scotland to the Big Apple averaging at around seven hours and 35 minutes, it’s a little much to make the transatlantic journey every time you fancy some authentic New York cuisine. Fortunately, the NY Grill & Cocktail Bar in Princes Square can feed your cravings for those US flavours, right here in the centre of Glasgow.

An all-American eatery

The restaurant has been in business for nearly a decade now and has built a loyal following of customers who appreciate its delicious food and welcoming atmosphere. Found on the top floor of Princes Square shopping centre above high-end jewellers and designer boutiques, it’s within easy reach of Queen Street and Central rail stations, Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Centre.

An interior worthy of Gotham

Inside, it has a sassy, sophisticated feel reminiscent of a Manhattan bar. Diners can watch chefs at work, adding to the NY Grill’s lively atmosphere. Large windows allow natural light to flood the space by day, creating a bright and airy ambiance. Paintings and photographs showcase iconic American landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, helping to create a sense of American heritage and nostalgia. Chandeliers, dark wood finishings, a parquet-style floor.

Let’s go outside

If you’d rather take the air and see some of Glasgow while you indulge in some signature dishes, take a seat on the cherry blossom terrace and watch the world go by, on Buchanan Street below. Given that this is a city often used to film New York movie scenes (see Indiana Jones 5 and The House of Mirth amongst others), you can let your imagination run wild and believe momentarily, that you’ve arrived in the city that never sleeps after all. Ordering a signature grilled burger will certainly help you suspend disbelief…

The Josper Grill

Cooking the old-fashioned way, but with a modern approach, the Josper (open) Grill is the centrepiece of the venue, both from a visual and a culinary perspective. Watch as the nifty piece of kit chars the outside of your meat to perfection while ensuring a tender and juicy middle. The tool caters ably to a range of classic American dishes, such as burgers, steaks, and ribs. And with all of the meat used in the restaurant sourced from high-quality suppliers, the result is lip-smackingly authentic.

Time to chow

Visit for a salt-beef baguette at lunchtime, a set pre-theatre menu, dinner or a multiple course Sunday roast (topside of beef with giant Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips and red wine gravy, or pan seared cod cheeks accompanied by parsnip puree, sauteed potatoes, wilted spinach and lemon and caper butter). The main menu consists of a la carte small plates and mains. Feeling more peckish than usual? Opt for a half rack of BBQ pork ribs with Devils Breath hot sauce or Jack Daniels glaze and buttermilk southern fried chicken breast served with fries and salad garnish. Or if you prefer something light, order a caesar salad, a dish first invented on US soil.

US-style bevvies

We’ve talked about food, but what will you drink? Be sure to check out NY Grill’s craft beer offering, as well as its range of over thirty bourbons and a bunch of rye whiskies. The drinks menu is designed to complement the flavours of the venue’s American-style cuisine and enhance the overseas vibe for its customers. In addition to cocktails (more on those shortly), the restaurant offers a selection of beers, with local and US-imported brews.

Classic cocktails and creative concoctions

Choose from classic cocktail mixes such as martinis, cosmos (an iconic fave of the Sex and the City crowd) and old fashioneds, as well as house specialties like the Central park Punch, Wolf of Wall Street and the Party in the US. There’s a separate menu for those seeking a theatrical experience and unexpected ingredients, such as CBD and hemp. These are creatively presented with garnishes and fun gimmicks — you may find a “dollar bill” clipped to your glass, a candy floss cloud, a caviar syringe beside, a flourish of dry ice, or an edible leaf.

You can book a table at the bar or in the main restaurant. NY Grill opens daily at 12 pm. From Sunday to Wednesday the last table sit down time is 7.15pm, with 8pm on Thursday and 8.30pm at the weekend. It’s a top choice for sampling all-American scran and swallies in an inviting setting.
