Most days, we can’t function without the decadent and rich essence of coffee filling our veins.

Whether you’re new in town or you’re looking to expand your coffee knowledge of Te Whanganui-a-Tara, we’ve found five secret spots for a damn good cup of kawhe.

Customs
cuisinesCoffee Shop

Customs sets out to reintroduce Wellington to the beauty that is coffee. They have amassed a dedicated following of like-minded customers. With a wall dedicated to coffee beans, you can easily see the origin, region and farm each batch came from. Try beans from Kenya, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Brazil, Costa Rica and more. You’ll begin to recognise the notes and flavours that mark each blend. Choose between a filtered fresh batch brew or the supreme blend espresso; both can be served hot or iced. Customs comes in hot with all your breakfast needs from coffees to treats; make sure to check out the loaded toast, buttery pastries and doughnuts.

Everyone drinks coffee for different reasons; some need one to get out of bed in the morning, and some prefer it iced or doused in milk and sugar. And then some people live, breathe and bleed coffee. For the latter group of coffee connoisseurs, we’ve found an oasis for you, Lamason Brew Bar; this is Wellington’s only siphon-brewed coffee bar. You can smell the rich aroma of the espresso bar from miles away. While you can still get your classic machine-made lattes and flat whites, we highly recommend the authentic experience the apparatus offers, watching your coffee brew before your eyes. Lamason’s primary focus is the art of brewing coffee, and they have also mastered the skill of making a top tier cheese toastie – perfect snack material.

Pour and Twist

Pour and Twist is blowing minds with its insane range of coffee and the multiple styles available. You can select beans from Kenya, Brazil, Ethiopia and more – a great way to expand your palette. The hot brew is made with fresh hand-brewed single-origin coffee, made with your choice of beans. The cold brew requires 16-hours to steep in cold water before serving. For the ultimate enjoyment, add maple and milk. Then there’s alternative coffee like the grey marble, made with activated charcoal powder and coffee, served over ice. A Malaysian-style coffee made with condensed milk, named Kopi, and a few other unique options are iced coffee, matcha, creamy black sesame, classic white coffee and taro coffee.
