A warung is an Indonesian style food-stall, usually on the side of the road, where the local people drink their coffee and have a little sweet snack, and gossip about the day-to-day life in the village. Made’s warung was a little roadside stall like that in the sixties. Run by her grandma, her mother, and assisted by the daughters, catering to the villagers in Kuta, which was still a sleepy fishing village. In the late sixties and early seventies the first travelers, tourists, hippies, surfers, or whatever name people gave to foreign holidaymakers, came to Bali, and life in rustic Kuta beach started to change. People wanted a little more than un-filtered coffee, rice cake, fried rice, and rice desserts. Made, the oldest daughter in the family, started to help out after school work was done, and slowly changed the Balinese warung into a more suitable eating place for foreigners, without changing the concept and the structure of a warung. The environment of the warung was fine and foreign guests from abroad as well as guests from other Indonesian islands were very happy chatting and hanging out at the warung, the only change needed was a bit more variety in the menu. Surfers introduced Jaffles, an Australian type grilled sandwich. other people asked for fruit salads, then came pancakes (still a best seller), and western-style breakfasts. Japanese people asked and showed made how to make sushi and sashimi. made adapted quickly and so the menu grew and became truly international, from gado2 to sushi Made’s warung became a must in Bali for the local Jakarta crowd and the foreign guests, a hang out were people wanted to see and be seen. renovating the old warung in kuta about 4 times brought made into the nineties and time was right to start thinking about a more spacious place, as kuta grew out of its own coat. Seminyak was the place were the next generation Made’s warung was going to blossom.
