Spotlight on Inn Deep in Glasgow

If you love craft beer, pay a visit to this West End haunt that’s perched right on the banks of the River Kelvin in Glasgow’s West End. Live performance, great food, a love for dogs and a passion for beer are at the heart of the philosophy here at Inn Deep. And, where else can you drink and listen to spoken word, under an original archway with a street art mural and a disco ball?!

A beer-based backstory

Independently owned by the same team behind the Williams Brothers Brewing Co (who created Williams Draught, Joker IPA, Good Times and more), Inn Deep began life in 2012. It occupies the unique site formerly home to The Big Blue and was set up by a group of friends wishing to start a business that served great beer (their motto being “craft beer, not crap beer”). As its popularity has increased, so have the number of taps, providing a superb range of favourites and lesser-known varieties.

Taps aplenty

With 29 taps including six in-house, 19 guest keg lines, three guest casks and more than 100 bottled varieties, you may be a while at the bar trying to decide. The house beer (William Bros) is a good place to start or if you’re a regular, switch up your usual and sample one of the exclusives, the beer of the week and the monthly tap takeover. And if you think you’ve tried everything, opt for one of the rare kegs that the venue imports from across the globe.

The “hawf n hawfs” are also really interesting and ideal for those who want to venture into the world of beer, but remain half in the world of spirits; they include a pale lager combined with bourbon, a pilsner with whisky, a wheat beer with rum and a pale ale with mezcal. Plus there’s wine, more spirits and juices for those not keen on beer.

From the kitchen

The venue serves food from noon to 8.45pm, focusing on hearty modern pub fare, such as pizzas, nachos, wings, ribs, tacos and burgers. Lighter bites include the likes of goat’s cheese croquettes, Moroccan crispy cauliflower, soup, lemon calamari with salsa verde and loaded fries — great for sharing alongside your pints.

There are lots of seasonal variations and specials appearing on the menu and everything is prepared using high-quality ingredients. Look out for great value money-saving deals on food during the week, providing a cost-effective alternative to weekend nights out.

Bring your dug to the pub

Your pup will enjoy the VIP treatment, with free biscuits and water provided, plus as the venue is so doggie-friendly, they’ll have an opportunity to socialise and relax, as you do the same with your human counterparts. Staff will even keep an eye out for them so you don’t have to worry if you go to the loo or the bar.

Inn Deep has been known to run adorable canine fancy-dress competitions. And as it’s right beside the river walk, it’s an ideal stop for a wee swally before or after walkies.

Indoors and out

Taking advantage of its waterside locale, Inn Deep has a covered outdoor area in the form of a railway arch. This structure may be old, but it’s made modern with funky street art on the back wall and pretty fairy lights. Heaters keep patrons warm year-round. And when the weather is warmer there’s plenty more seating just outside of the archway and right beside the river; this is covered by colourful shade sails and comes into its own during the summer months when it’s buzzing till late with al fresco drinkers and diners.

Spoken word and Sunday quizzes

Regular events at the venue include live music, poetry open mics, a super popular Sunday quiz and sports fixtures on the big screen. The city’s premier spoken word night has been held here since 2013; Inn Deep poetry, hosted by Sam Small. You can keep informed of all the goings on via the pub’s social media.

Easily accessible via subway (Kelvingrove Station is very closeby) and with a range of buses on the doorstep, the venue is found on the Great Western Road. Do stop by and check out Inn Deep for yourself. Be sure to make a reservation if you want to guarantee a table, especially at the weekend and on event nights. Inn Deep is a great choice, whether you’re catching up with mates, meeting for a laid-back date, or popping in for a solo pint.
