Many great things have come out of France, and we can all agree that almond croissants are one of them.
A fiercely debated topic across the likes of Tik Tok and Instagram in Aotearoa at the moment, here are our top picks on where to actually find a great almond croissant in Auckland.
What started as a way to showcase the brilliance and versatility of a sandwich ended up being so much more. Fort Greene is our go-to for early morning catch-ups, indulgent weekends and a cheeky pit stop before work. We can get our hands on the two things we love the most; coffee and almond croissants. Fort Greene bakes a fresh batch of goodies every day in-house; the smell alone is irresistible. The flaky and buttery creation melts in your mouth, and the almonds on top are the perfect companion. We love to have ours warm and lathered in butter!
Parnell is home to the sweetest of treats and the quaintest eateries, Vaniyé Patisserie being one of them. The boutique patisserie easily won over the hearts of Aucklanders with the smell of baked goods and a healthy dose of sugar-based morsels. You can get your hands on a variety of treats, from birthday cakes to hot cross buns, brioche loaf and almond croissants. Everything you eat is made with passion, skill and enthusiasm – Vaniyé Patisserie thrives to serve the most authentic French delicacies. If you cannot make it to Vaniyé Patisserie, you can order online and have the French delicacies delivered to your door.
We love everything about Amano, whether we’re visiting for dinner with friends or a quick stop in the morning, we cannot get enough. The Italian-inspired restaurant is renowned for its homely and hearty cuisine; this applies to the hidden bakery out back. Take a seat inside the restaurant and experience the best of both worlds, baked goods and cocktails. Get your lovingly handmade almond croissant, warm from the oven and lathered with butter, then grab your breakfast martini with your free hand. The breakfast martini pairs vodka, mixed berry marmalade, vanilla and egg whites. Bite, sip and repeat. Other pastries on the menu include pain au chocolate, far Breton and cinnamon brioche.
In our opinion, Auckland cannot have enough French bakeries, which means we can always get our hands on our favourite pastries. When you have food-related needs, there is one place you need to go, Dominion Road. That is where you can find little old La Voie Française, a quaint French eatery that specialises in sweet and savoury baked goods. On the menu, there is freshly made lemon meringue tarts, sesame baguettes, pain au chocolat and croissant aux amandes (almonds). The almond croissants are rich and indulgent, dusted with icing sugar and served at the perfect temperature; pair them with a cup of tea or coffee.
Little French Café is a bustling spot in Point Chevalier; it amassed a cult-like following for its authentic French delicacies. It’s easy to understand when you take a bite out of one of the freshly baked almond croissants; they are seriously delicious. Lovingly handmade each day, the light and airy creation is the embodiment of perfection. Little French Café also offer a box of six almond croissants and a mixed box, containing almond croissants, as well as cheese and ham. There is a wide variety of treats to be tried; macaron’s and mille-feuille’s, pain au chocolat and kouign amann.
