Ice cream, ice cream, we all scream for ice cream!

Well, you may not be literally screaming for it, but with the hot weather on the way you may well be on the lookout for Melbourne’s best ice creameries, so let’s go.

Gelato Messina can be found at four venues across Melbourne. They make their gelato from milk that is delivered fresh daily from their farm in Numurkah, and all of the chunky bits in their ice cream is made in-house.

Here you will find their 35-strong classic flavour range, plus five daily specials.

Gelato Messina has a flavour to suit everyone; they make alcohol-free, egg-free, gluten-free, nut-free and vegan ice creams and sorbets.

Try the blood orange sorbet, made from Redbelly Citrus from Griffiths, NSW, or the chocolate fondant, featuring their own house made chocolate. Or sample the pandan and coconut sorbet, if Asian flavours are what you seek.

What Gelato Messina menu item should you try? Dish Cult recommends the phenomenal looking $62 Strawberries & Cream Gelato Cake, for that special occasion or just because you can.

This ice creamery prides itself on its ‘perfectly imperfect’ scoops, which are made fresh daily on the premises using seasonal produce.

There are all of the classic flavours that you’d expect – vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, honeycomb, mint – plus a few Italian specialities (fior di latte and stracciatella.)

Piccolina has pastry chefs on staff who work alongside the gelato makers to create some truly sublime cakes. These cakes are all natural, unique, and luscious. Try the mini Bombe Alaska for one if you need to spoil yourself – it’s frozen chocolate ganache, salted caramel gelato, peanut butter gelato, chocolate fudge, and Italian meringue.

Sister and brother team Lisa and Jamie front up this gelato business. Lisa went to Italy to learn the art of making gelato before bringing that knowledge home and pairing up with her brother to start their own store. They only use fresh fruit in their ice creams and sorbets.

There are so many yummy flavours here that you’ll be hard-pressed to make a decision. Try the raspberry swirl, the vanilla lemon slice, or the coconut with roasted macadamia. Then there’s the strawberry, mango, or lemon sorbetto, if you’re after a truly fruity fix.

If it is chocolate you crave, grab a scoop of the nutella swirl, bacio, or vegan chocolate. Pidapipo makes gorgeous ice cream cakes too.

What Pidapipo menu item should you try? Dish Cult recommends the $7.30 Single Scoop of Pineapple Ice Cream with Whipped Cream & Maraschino Cherries.
