They’re a sweet, spicy and fruity welcome to Easter…
While it’s true that you can get them practically year-round at the supermarkets, the best hot cross buns can only be found at Easter time. And we’ve rounded up some of Brisbane’s best, so hop to it!
While Banneton Bakery and Café
is best known for its traditional sourdough breads, croissants, and flaky pain au chocolat, its bakers also know how to make a seriously good hot cross bun.
People eager wait for the bakery to produce the finely balanced soft buns, dotted with dried fruits, spices, and brushed with a refreshingly bright spiced orange glaze.
While you’re there for the hot cross buns, you can grab a coffee and perhaps a customer favourite, the cinnamon and vanilla scroll, just to power you through the busy Easter season.
The hot cross buns at Flour & Chocolate
deserve their place on this list of Brisbane’s best!
The bakers start with sustainable flour, and add raisins, sultanas, cranberries, figs, apricots, and other fruits to produce a bun that is soft, fragrant and, quite frankly, delicious.
While the traditional buns are a best seller, Flour & Chocolate has also not been afraid to innovate and in Easter’s past have concocted such delights as the Black Forest hot cross bun with cherries and Callebaut milk chocolate. Keep an eye out for them this Easter, as they tend to go out fast.
Sprout Artisan Bakery is all about hand-crafted artisanal deliciousness, and the hot cross buns at Easter time certainly live up to the hype!
The hot cross buns here are generously loaded with the usual suspects of dried fruits, then lightly spiced and adorned with the all-important cross. The buns also seem to be larger than many other hot cross buns, but that just means there’s more to enjoy!
The bakery’s breads and coffees have also received rave reviews, so give them a try when you pick up your buns.
From traditional hot cross buns to the more decadent hot cross brownie, Dello Mano certainly knows what it’s doing come Easter time.
Here, the hot cross buns are made with a light but satisfying dough, dotted with raisins and dried fruits, and made fragrant with spices. After baking, the buns come out perfectly golden brown, moist, and ready to blast the palate with flavours.
For a less traditional, yet very worthwhile experience, try the hot cross brownie featuring Belgian chocolate both on the inside and outside, as well as Belgian white chocolate crosses.
If you’re looking for some classic hot cross buns, you’ll most certainly find them at Banjo’s.
The Traditional fruit hot cross bun is a pillowy affair full of sultanas, currants, and spices, while their Gourmet hot cross buns crank the yum factor up to 11. It’s packed with even more fruits and spices as well as citrus peel for that extra zing.
For those who are looking for something sweeter, you can’t go past the Double choc Nutella hot cross buns. Chocolate chips are liberally peppered through the buns which have a Nutella core, chocolate cross, and an extra dollop of chocolate, just because they can.
