Many of us a love a fresh, cold beer. With so much choice, especially in Manchester, sometimes it’s easy to stick to what we know and like. And that’s ok, but there are there are so many different places offering really, really good beers in this great Northern city and we’d hate for you to miss out. So we’ve created this guide to our favourite places for unique and wonderful craft beers across the city that we think you might like. This guide is not only for craft beer veterans, but for those who want to support independent businesses and try out different, local beers across Manchester.
Bundobust serves the best vegetarian and vegan Gujarati street food in Manchester, but it also makes incredible beer. Whilst the Bundobust in Manchester Piccadilly opened in 2016, it was not until 2021 that the Bundobust Brewery opened. Bundobust has changed the game for casual dining and craft beer. There are a number of beers to choose from, ones made by themselves, other companies and collaborations between them and other breweries.
For example, there are two lovely session IPAs – one by Northern Monk and another by Kirkstall, which is also gluten free. The selection of Bundobust beers are large, from the pale ale, Peela (there is now the new Big Peela too), the Chaitro, that is a smooth and creamy Porter, the Kipsy Bhai, a Kellerbier styled German lager and the East is East, a New England IPA. The team has also collaborated with Thornbridge to make the Dark Mild, full of coffee, hazelnut and fruit and nut flavours.
Cloudwater Brewery’s beer is inspired by the changing seasons, the different lifestyles that come with each season and the enjoyment of the natural world. The beers are made with the community and the environment at mind. The brewery is to be found in the Piccadilly Trading Estate, next to the Unit 9 Taproom.
From the staples to its guests, there are lots of beers to choose from. The Helles is a gorgeous lager that does what you expect it would. We recommend the ‘Happy!’ beer, which is a pale ale and the ‘How Wonderful!’ hazy pale ale. The ‘With Open Arms’ pilsner is another must try. It’s a bright and herbal beer that is made in collaboration with G.L.O.W., who aim to break the stigmas surrounding women in the beer industry.
Situated in the heart of the Northern Quarter (as it should be with its name), this refectory celebrates the best of what Northern Monk has to offer. Here you can either take away a few beers or sit in one of the three rooms to enjoy your drink. On tap you’ll find Northern Monk’s own classics, the Eternal which is a mild session IPA and Faith, a slightly stronger hazy pale ale. You can expect plenty of other beers on tap too, such as the original Czechvar Budweiser Budvar, Fidens Brewing Co’s fantastic New England hazy IPA and the Dangle, an imperial stout made by the Third Moon Brewing Company.
This small and cosy brewery is at the forefront of modern British beer innovation. The Runaway Brewery is an independent microbrewery in the modern industrial area of Green Quarter, north of the city centre. The brewing process here puts flavour and high quality first, which is why despite being contemporary in style it uses traditional methods to make the beer. There are some gorgeous and surprising beers available, such as the rhubarb and hibiscus sour and the ESB, which has toffee, dark caramels and dried fruits all made with Belgian malts.
Tucked away in leafy West Didsbury, just south of the city centre, The George Charles building was once a veggie shop owned by a dude named George Charles—an Armenian immigrant with a knack for craftiness.
