We love them every way, and simply have to share where the best ones in Auckland are served up!
Hotel Ponsonby is a 3-in-1 hot spot; a public bar, bistro and beer garden. There are different areas within the restaurant for every mood; a TV screen showing sports in one and a courtyard or dining room for those who want to catch up – great for families. Located in the historic Post office building, the new design enhances the original beauty of the space. The casual and comforting atmosphere comes together with a fire place for the colder nights, beautiful booth seating and a natural colour palette. Hotel Ponsonby take a more sophisticated approach to gastro dining, experience dishes with a twist like fried pickled onions – a tangy take on the classic onion ring! They also serve rosemary fries, pork belly with apple sauce and many more delicious dishes.
When you think of fast food you don’t usually think of a vegan/vegetarian restaurant – but you should. Lord of the Fries creates outstanding burgers, hotdogs, and sides. They use locally sourced ingredients inspired by international flavours to excite the public with new meat alternatives. An exciting and funky spot to introduce friends and family to. While you can just order a side of crispy onion rings to pair with a vegan milkshake, the mixed munch box is irresistible. Sliced onion, lightly battered and deep fried to perfection joins fake chick’n goodness and golden fries to make a box of irresistible flavours.
The Flying Moa thrives to preserve the classic kiwi pub, providing New Zealanders with the natural habitat we deserve. This is a family friendly restaurant with an option to keep everyone entertained; from a friendly game on the pool table, quiz nights to prove your trivia knowledge and a perfect spot to watch the rugby. There are many areas within the restaurant to suit your dining needs, the formal area for dinner, the bar seating for snacks and the outdoor area for a beer or two. Grab a plate of crispy onion rings, lathered in aioli before you get your hands dirty with the El Diablo burger.
The Flaming Onion is a small and intimate restaurant, a great little spot with big flavourful dishes. The Remuera restaurant has a garden area if you want to bring the whole squad out during the warmer months. If you go and visit, be prepared for things to get a bit messy. Every bite is juicer than the last. Start your meal with some beer battered onion rings, have them as a side, in a combo or as part of your delicious gourmet burger. The Honky Tonk, not to be missed, is made with premium New Zealand Wagyu beef, rosemary peppered streaky bacon, jalapenos and of course, onion rings. Now that’s a mouthful.
If you’re looking for a cosy booth to perch in for a meal, or a nice sheltered outdoor area to catch up with friends then Corner Burger is the restaurant for you.
