Vegan cuisine is taking Auckland by storm, and we can't wait to dive into our next dish.
We’ve rounded up the best places to head for an easy and delicious vegan meal, with plenty of options to keep even your non-vegan friends happy!
Khu Khu Eatery is a Thai-inspired restaurant that boasts a menu full of unique, fresh and exciting flavours. The tapa-style dishes encourage diners to share as a table; this is the best way to experience the cuisine. The small yet powerful menu showcases dishes like the gingerlicious pad khing duck, kumara spring rolls and Panang curry. A showstopper is the duck drunken noodles; this savoury veggie-packed noodle dish introduces the mind-blowing vegan duck. End the night on a sweet note with the sago sensation; the refreshing blend of sago, coconut cream, salted jackfruit and mango jelly in a delicate almond meal tart is absolutely divine.
Lord of The Fries eagerly shuns the predisposition that vegan food has to be a plate of fruit and veg. By creating a venue dedicated to vegan comfort food, Lord of The Fries will forever hold a place in our hearts. Whether you pop in for a quick bite to eat at one of their Auckland locations or order from the comfort of your home, you won’t be disappointed. On the menu, you’ll find succulent burgers, American style hot dogs and classic sides like onion rings and vegan nuggets. The Chicago hot dog is what dreams are made of; the veg sausage is piled high with traditional fillings, pickles, relish, peppers and a heavy-handed layer of mustard.
Belly Worship is the best of both worlds with vegan and meat options available; the Asian fusion cuisine is fresh, innovative and delicious. The restaurant is warm and welcoming and is a great little spot for a casual night out with friends. Kick things off with a Chinese-inspired burrito, served with a salad, pickles, peanuts, pickled onions and homemade sauce. Choose between four vegan fillings; spicy sliced potatoes, lemon vegan chicken (a crowd favourite), vegan duck or the vegan lychee pork. You’ll also find bao buns, homemade dumplings and smaller sharing plates on the menu. Our personal favourite is the spicy tofu dumplings with spinach and carrot.
Ebisu is a sleek and elegant establishment located on the waterfront, offering a luxurious selection of vegan dishes. The menu consists of contemporary Japanese cuisine, from classic fare like sushi to creative and flavourful mains like the miso-glazed eggplant. Dine a la carte or opt for the traditional vegan set menu with a premium sake match. Enjoy a selection of dishes ranging from the rainbow vegetable roll with avocado, beetroot salad, tomatoes and cucumber, to teriyaki tofu with black miso jam, courgette, carrot julienne, cherry tomatoes and white truffle oil. Indulge in the extensive sake menu or dabble in a Japanese-inspired cocktail or two.
Redefining plant-based food is no easy task, yet The Butcher’s Son has set out to do just that in the most delectable way; by filleting, mincing, chopping, slicing and dicing vegetables, plants and fruit to create hearty and memorable dishes. Grab a selection of shareable plates for the table or; order from the salads, bowls and burger section of the menu. Treat yourself to a sun-fed ‘chicken’ burger with miso slaw, baby spinach and chilli jam on a toasted bun with a side of fries. We highly recommend the nachos, with Mexican beans, guacamole, tomatoes, jalapeno salsa and ‘cheese’ sauce. Not only is the food 100% vegan, but the drinks are too; using plant-based substitutes, you can enjoy a cheeky whisky sour or a refreshing yet sweet amaretto sour.
