A spotlight on London's The Waterman's Arms

Down a quaint side road of the quiet neighbourhood of Millwall, mere minutes from the riverbank, you’ll find the charming, eclectic home of The Waterman’s Arms. Sitting in the shadows of Canary Wharf, in what was once a historic grade 2 listed pub, the newly renovated gastropub brings its once-sleepy surroundings alive.

Different drinks

From the street, The Waterman’s Arms looks like any old red-brick London pub– however, tides change once you step a foot inside. The team has managed to masterfully refurbish the space into a light, modern interior while still holding on to the pub’s historic ambiance, as well as hold onto the secret garden out the back. Take your pick from their brand new extended bar area, mezzanine, or country yard-style garden, there’s certainly a table for every occassion. When the weather comes out to play, it’s a no-brainer to perch yourself under the sun street-side or out the back.

Whether you’re looking for a pint and a snack, something more substantial, some frozen margaritas in the sun, a BYOB date night, a Wednesday pub quiz, or a Saturday night with live music, the gastropub is really doing it all. Dubbed an ol’ reliable from us, with Canary Wharf a 10-min trip away, the city just 20-mins, and Greenwich a 15-min walk, it’s a central spot to cater to friends all across town.

Better yet, upstairs hosts overnight rooms for travellers and out-of-towners. Draped in luxury, each room has a private en-suite, premium linen and toiletries, maid-service, and tea & coffee, as well as your own robe for your stay. Ideal for toddling up to bed after a big night at the pub.

Now onto the food! Prying away from the traditional ‘pub grub’, The Waterman’s Arms has carefully curated a seasonal menu that’ll have you coming back for more than just a couple of pints. In order to be using only the best produce available at the time, the menu is constantly revolving, but recent delights have included sea salt & rosemary focaccia, buttermilk fried calamari with lemon aioli, Cornish mussels in a white wine sauce, and a baked camembert with truffle honey to start.

Moving on to mains, expect to see the likes of The Waterman’s double smash beef burger with smoked bacon and bone marrow mayo on a brioche bun, braised beef shin and oxtail hot pot, free range pork belly with a black pudding croquette, and confit chicken leg with a crispy chicken skin. It wouldn’t be a pub menu without a Sunday roast too! Choose between the beef, pork belly, roast chicken, or roast nut loaf, all served with duck fat roast potatoes, kale, honey roast carrots & celeriac, beef bone gravy. Simply divine.

And for the early birds, The Waterman’s Arms also offer a bang up breakfast menu. Serving up smoked streaky bacon, Cumberland sausage, and fried egg sandwiches, mature cheddar & spring onion omelettes, flat iron steaks with hash browns and chimichuri, The Waterman’s breakfast burgers, and both a Full English and Full Veggie. Add on a cup of Ozone coffee and perhaps a mocktail, and get your day started on the right foot.

So, come sip on Aperol Spritz’s in the sunshine or cosy up for a burger and pint on quiz night, and make the most of what The Waterman’s Arms has to offer.

You’ll find them at 1 Glenaffric Avenue, London E14 3BW, just be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment!
