This year’s winner for the Hottest New Opening, as voted by you, is… Lucky 8 in Ponsonby.
Highly Recommended: Nanny’s Eatery in Kingsland
Arriving on the scene only a mere few months ago, Lucky 8 hit Ponsonby Road with a brand new concept. Sister-restaurant to Dominion Road’s Mr Hao restaurant, Lucky 8 hones in on a more selective menu.
The Asian tap and tapas bar focuses on one sole number – eight. $8 cocktails and $8 plates are the go. To find the hot new bar, patrons are told to follow the black staircase on the Ponsonby strip and patiently hope they have a seat for you (reservations are for 6+ guests only). The waitlist at the top of the stairs is an indication of Lucky 8’s sudden popularity.
Offering a modern-age eatery amongst the historical institutions of the neighbourhood, Lucky 8 stands out from the crowd with its dark walls and neon red interior, now massively recognisable even in the slightest glimpse of an Instagram story.
It’s easy to tell a lot of love and passion went into the new opening, however, it’s the well-thought-out menu that’s really secured Lucky 8 their victorious spot for Hottest New Opening. It’s short and precise, with clear indication of what’s enough for one person or for the whole table – ordering has never been easier.
Popular picks emerging are the Spicy and Sour Cucumber salad, Black Pepper Beef Cheek, Hao’s Chilli Chicken, Banana Leaf Salmon, Chicken Thigh Skewers, and Mushroom Fries. A selection of hot and cold dishes, a variety of proteins, and innovative ways to deliver traditional Asian flavours make for a memorable and extensive trip around the table.
Offering a new way to dine at an attractive price point is one reason we believe Lucky 8 has found such success in the busy precinct, alongside their attentive staff, easy QR ordering, picture-perfect decor, and the exclusiveness felt dining in such a sought-after spot.
