Slap an assortment of fresh, flavourful and delicious ingredients between two slices of bread and consider us sold.
We believe that sandwiches are underrated; visit the following spots for the best sammies in town.
Every day can be a cheat day when you visit Fat Belly Deli; the gourmet sandwiches are to die for. The ingredients are fresh and diverse to suit all tastes, and the sandwiches are incredibly generous in size. The menu showcases humorously named sandwiches like the fishy one, the Joey Tribbiani and the muther clucker. Our go-to has to be the passenger; it is light and fresh with chicken, avocado, red onion, tomatoes, basil and aioli. You can also choose to build your own sandwich with up to four fillings. We also highly recommend trying Fat Belly Deli’s baked potatoes; they are huge and next level indulgent.
Fort Greene set out on a mission to showcase the versatility of sandwiches; a sandwich can be any meal, and any meal can be a sandwich. Fort Greene is a sandwich specialist, making their bread in-house, fresh every day, then comes the fillings of seasonal locally sourced produce. A timeless classic is the grilled cheese sandwich with a mix of four types of cheese and house-made pink pickles on Fort Greene Country sourdough. For something a little different, go for the fish one with house-cured and smoked Kahawai fish fingers, mushy peas, tartare and organic pea feathers on Fort Greene New York rye. Wash it down with a nice cold beer, wine or caffeinated beverage.
One of the best things we have ever taken a bite out of was a sammies from Hero Sandwich House. These sandwiches are masterpieces; each one is an exquisite work of art that is sure to haunt your tastebuds for years to come. On the hot and fresh menu, you will find beauties like the chicken and bacon jam, the truffle sammie and our personal favourite, the infamous Philly cheese; the thinly sliced steak is lathered in cheese and melts in your mouth. What better way to improve your week than with a sandwich that rivals all sandwiches? If you are out and about on the weekend, visit Hero on a Saturday and experience a unique creation made by local talent.
Deli, coffee shop and eatery; Pastrami and Rye has it all. Whether you’re popping by for a quick brew before work or visiting on your lunch break, you will not be able to resist the insane sandwiches. The American-style deli sandwiches are hot off the griddle and ready to be devoured. From Reuben’s to Cuban’s, there is a flavour to suit every palate. One of our favourites is the Croque Monsieur; the French classic includes ham, cheese, mustard and Bechamel on Pain De Mie bread. Pastrami and Rye also has gigantic sandwiches on the menu; these metre long subs are a tasty challenge, great for a group of hungry friends.
You’re going to need both hands when you visit Dedwood Deli; this Ponsonby sandwich joint is shaping up to be the ultimate lunch hub. The menu consists of exciting flavours, fresh ingredients and creative combinations. A top contender in our books is the chimi’ steak sandwich, which pairs medium-rare sirloin with roast capsicum, paprika mayo and Dedwood chimichurri. Another crowd-pleaser is the Korean pork belly with house gochujang and honey sauce with roasted pork belly, almonds and kimchi. There are also classic options like the New York Reuben and three-cheese portobello sandwich.
