The dockside taqueria known as Madre may only have opened its doors in 2019, but it’s already become the number one Mexican spot in Liverpool. The owners of Belzan have really outdone themselves this time, as they have brought all the flavours and feels of Mexico city’s taquerias to Liverpool’s docks.

At Madre, you can find all your Mexican favourites with a contemporary twist, including the tacos with every filling you could dream of; from the much-loved Birria De Res to a vegan favourite – the cabbage and pepper toreados. There are also upscale Tacos Especial, which come in singles; your choices are rib-eye carne asada vampiro (don’t worry it’s a type of taco, not a bloodsucker) and the seared scallop and mole, which are both to die for.

There is also plenty to choose from one the drinks side of the menu, including an array of margaritas filled with illegal Mezcal (not sure if that’s good or bad), agave and fresh lime. You’ll also find a range of house drinks, including a mexican-style Aperol spritz called Naked and Famous, and the Bandaq, which according to Madre is the best banana daiquiri in the world.

Cabo offers a slice of paradise in the quiet market town of Ormskirk, located on the outskirts of Liverpool. Here, you will find all your favourite Mexican dishes, as well as plenty of cocktails and rum – what more could you ask for?

If you fancy eating out for a change, head to Cabo for taco Tuesdays and fill your boots with a wide range of fillings including slow cooked chicken tinga, pork barbacoa, tex mex chicken or jackfruit barbacoa. You can also add on your favourite extras; for extra spice throw in some jalapenos or for that extra cheesiness go for more monterrey jack cheese or the vegan cheese alternative. Don’t forget to add your sauce – are you more of a mild guacamole type or a spicy red picante type?

If you are feeling extra peckish, why not add on some cheesy nachos or Mexican fries. You could also share some sides – the beautifully crispy Caribbean fried chicken is a must-try. For those with a sweet tooth, you’ve got to try the buñuelos – a Mexican doughnut smothered in dulce de leche sauce, cinnamon, sugar and cream.

La Parilla is Bold Street’s much-loved Mexican restaurant. The best way to find the restaurant is to spot Mehmet, the colourful busker who is always performing outside La Parilla with his signature sombrero and poncho. Once you’ve passed Mehmet and head into the restaurant, the smell of delicious Mexican cuisine will hit you as soon as you walk through the door. Here, you can find a range of traditional Mexican dishes, including tacos, enchiladas and chimichangas. There are various Mexican chicken options, such as chicken de crema picante, pollo rio grande and the spicy Mexican chicken wings. If you are feeling extra hungry, you should order the massive Everest Montana nachos smothered in melted cheese, jalapenos, salsa, guacamole and sour cream.

If you prefer picky bits, then you always choose from the tapas menu. If you order before 5pm, you should go for the Sombrero Liberta, which includes five tapas dishes of your choice, plus Mexican rice and dressed mixed leaves. There are so many tapas dishes to try, but some must-haves include the taquitos, mini chilli chicken and chorizo skewers, Mexican volcano bombs (spicy cream cheese balls) and the camote camote (sweet potato fries with plenty of Mexican toppings).
