Tequila and tacos, need we say more?
The Christschurch hospitality scene is a melting pot of cuisines – something we love the most about the city. With some of the best global food you’ll find in New Zealand, there’s no shortage of any craving you could have. Now, we’re rounding up all the best places to get your Mexican hit in ChCh.
Do you dare to be different? Habanero’s Urban Mexican Grill does. This restaurant is a must-try for fast, fresh and traditional Mexican cuisine with a modern twist. Bring the whole family or a group of friends to Habanero’s and order a variety of authentic Mexican sharing dishes. Mix, match, swap and share – this is the best way to experience Mexican food. The menu has many flavourful numbers like the quesadilla melts, crispy chimichangas, action-packed burritos and of course, tacos. We cannot recommend Habanero’s enough; it’s our go-to spot for hearty food and great company.
Exciting dishes, boozy cocktails, and a fun and vibrant atmosphere? We must be at Mexicano’s. This restaurant pulls out all the stops to make every dining experience one to remember. Before you lose yourself in a tidal wave of fruity margaritas, make sure to line your stomach first. Mexicano’s have an insane range of 6” soft shell tacos, with all your favourite fillings from pulled pork to flank steak, grilled chicken to fire-grilled portobello mushroom. Throw in some colourful veg, a generous dose of salsa, and you’re ready to go. The margarita menu proves that dreams can come true; the endless selection includes beauties like the frozen slushy margarita, guava, strawberry, mango, spiced pineapple and many more!
If you’ve visited this little hole in the wall, then you understand the hype. Cactus Mexican & Mediterranean has perfectly replicated the authentic flavours found in both cuisines. Instead of fusing the two, Cactus has dedicated a menu to each style with a variety of traditional dishes listed beneath them. That way, if you can’t make your mind up, you can order the best of both worlds. Our regular Friday night order is the beef solvaki on hot pita bread and a 12” quesadilla doused in sour cream. A crowd favourite is the crispy chicken tacos with melted cheese, chipotle mayo and Fresca salsa. Cactus has limited seating available; book in advance or take your haul home.
Gather your friends and family, and head over to El Rancho for an enticing meal that ignites the imagination and reinvigorates your tastebuds. Celebrate a special occasion or make an unremarkable day remarking with a visit to El Rancho’s vibrant and colourful restaurant. Awaken your senses with the cheese and jalapeno bites before you hit the main course of classic dishes like soft tacos, quesadillas, burritos and nachos. Step two and three of the order requires you to pick a filling (meat, veg or chicken) before you finally, daringly, choose a level of spice. If you overestimate your tongue’s ability to manage the heat, then cool things down with an ice-cold Corona.
There’s nothing more passionate than Mexican and Latin American cuisine; The Headless Mexican easily creates memorable dishes with big personalities. We love getting our hands dirty with the juicy burritos and the delectable chimichanga’s. The tostada salad has to be the most intriguing and delicious dish we’ve ever tried. Served in a hand-crafted crisp tortilla bowl with a selection of fresh salad, your choice of savoury filling and drizzled with a smoked chipotle aioli; this work of art looks as good as it tastes. Crack a cold Desperado, or in honour of the restaurant’s name, try the Headless Mexican cocktail with tequila, Kahlua and Corona.
