The Best Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Auckland

One of the friendliest bars on the block, The Cav is a go-to for city dwellers after work or on a particularly sunny afternoon – and of course, everyone’s furry mates are more than welcome to tag along. What’s even better, The Cav has recently finished their outdoor deck refurbishment, creating every more room for all the pups. Enjoy a tonne of classic gastropub meals ranging from fish and chips and tacos to naked burritos and honey-glazed halloumi, all while your dog gets some much welcomed socialising.

It’s not often you’ll see dogs on a rooftop bar but at The Glass Goose that’s a normal weekend. Find the hidden staircase and head up to the oasis for an afternoon/evening of heavenly food, live music and boozy cocktails. With a fake carpet of greenery, your dog will think he’s at the park. For the humans in the group the food menu is made to share with smaller dishes like the duck fat potato skins with garlic and rosemary. But if you are looking for something bigger, all for yourself, then they do have a couple of delicious mains like the Wagyu short rib served with a parsnip puree.

Clear your calendars, Wynyard Paw-vilion hosts a dog day between 11am-1pm on the first Sunday of every month. Treat your furry-friends to snacks in the form of pup-cakes or buy them beautiful accessories – a cut of the proceeds for specialty dog products goes to help raise funds for Pet Refuge NZ. A professional photographer also attends this event to capture all of the adorable moments. And while this is a day of spoiling our beloved dogs there are also drink specials on for the lovely owners! Wynyard Pavilion is always dog friendly, whether you pop by in the morning for a quick coffee or visit for dinner (the chargrilled scotch fillet is unbeatable) your dog is always welcome. 

After a long day playing fetch at the beach everyone involved will need a nice cold bev. Now that you’ve tuckered everyone out, it’s time to relax. Where better to stop off than the Takapuna Beach Café. Take a seat on the sunny deck and look out at the sea, get your dog/s a big bowl of water and grab yourself a gelato shake – the gelato is made in house and the flavours change with the seasons. The doors open at 6am to give the early risers a perfect location for a well needed cup of coffee. Start the day off on a high note and get the grill breakfast with bacon, house made sausages and eggs your way. 

If you find yourself out in east Auckland with your dog and an empty stomach, Botany Commons is a no-brainer. The spacious gin garden set in the centre of Botany Town Centre will provide your pup with all the people-watching entertainment in the world while you can sit back and relax with some cold ones and an extensive and delicious menu. Pizzas to share, a range of gourmet burgers, plenty of share plates and some great seating in the shade, Botany Commons will have both you and your dog well satisfied.

The Garden Shed is a great spot to stop off at after a walk, get your dog a big bowl of water as you browse through the menu. With multiple outdoor areas to seat yourself you can visit anytime of the year and know that your dog will have a warm spot to park up in – a fully sheltered courtyard out the back or the sun-soaked seating on the street. Treat yourself to one of their fruity cocktails or quench your thirst with their alcoholic ginger beer. If you’re looking for a snack then The Garden Shed have a great selection of sharing plates and platters. A crowd favourite being the exotic coconut and lime ceviche; served with pineapple and strawberry granita, corn chips and a sprinkle of coconut flakes on top. 

If you’re looking for a group of like-minded dog lovers and an endless supply of furry friends then Pocket Bar’s monthly Dog and Grog event can’t be missed. Held on the third Saturday of the month between 12-2pm, it’s an event you won’t want to miss. Leave the leashes at the door and let the dogs run wild. With a closed off beer garden out back you can rest easy with a beer in hand knowing your doggo is safe. If you miss Dog and Grog then feel free to pop down anytime as this venue is dog friendly every day. Owners can enjoy a selection of tapas from the menu like the cheesy arancini balls, buffalo wings or spiced African lamb chops.
