As the thick heat of summer sets in, our taste buds start to yearn for something a little lighter, a little fresher and dare I say it, a little pinker.
Enter rosé–The perfect summer drink to quench your thirst. Summertime is rosé’s time to shine.
While most wines are more special as they age, rosé is a rule-breaker-With the fresher and more seasonal, the better. If you weren’t quite convinced that rosé is the drink of choice for summer, we’ve rounded up some pretty special spots to enjoy a glass in the sunshine. So, get ready to nurse a drink all summer long.
Located up a hidden staircase on Federal Street, The Glass Goose feels like a well-kept secret. But, the bustling atmosphere will quickly assure you that this is a well-loved spot. Offering a leafy sun-drenched roof-top punctuated by bright flowers, this is the bar to instantly put you in the summer #mood. If a local offering is something important to you, The Glass Goose provides classic New Zealand Malborough rosé on the menu here. The Glass Goose is best shared with a group of your best friends, to take full advantage of its lively atmosphere and tapas-style offerings.
Take everything you’ve ever associated with a tavern and throw it out the window-The Morningside Tavern is about to throw you for a loop. Located in the up and coming Morningside precinct, the Morningside Tavern takes over a huge industrial space (formally a carpet manufacturer) and offers sprawling indoor couches and outdoor benches in the sun. A fresh take on the neighbourhood bar, the high ceilings, brick walls, and glass courtyard are your new local reinvented. The wine list is extensive here and the offerings are split out in to good, great, and awesome with corresponding price increases-So, there’s a rosé for anyone, from budgeter and bougie.
A Ponsonby institution (and perhaps right-of-passage?) it’s hard to miss The Cav sitting proudly near the top of College hill. While it’s classified as a gastro-pub, this is far from the dingy pool-tabled spot you might imagine. Catching the summer sun, The Cav is all warm woods and glowing white inside–But, if outdoor seating is more your thing head-up to the balcony nab a spot overlooking the city. Offering a great selection of wine, The Cav is a great laid-back summer spot for post-work drinks in the sun.
Pocket Bar is a little like rosé itself–Young, lively, and fresh. Undoubtedly one of Grey Lynn’s best-kept secrets, Pocket Bar is conservatory meets watering hole. Located in the unassuming old ASB bank, you can be forgiven for not expecting the lush green-house interior that greets you just around the corner. Formally a community garden, Pocket keeps a chilled out and friendly vibe with live music on the sunny deck out back to accompany your Sunday session. Covering all your rosé bases, there’s an extensive wine list covering both local and more exotic offerings.
Few things say summer like a trip to Mission Bay, so we recommend on your next visit you stop in at the Good George Craft House. Offering long benches and summer umbrellas, this is just the spot to quench your thirst after a long day of beaching. Of-course, the craft Good George beers and ciders are on offer here, but there’s some pretty special hand-picked wines as well. Take inspiration from the white sands of Mission Bay and go local with a Matawhero rosé to quench your thirst. But, if you’re feeling like something from a little further afield the French Rameau D’or rosé is hard to beat as well.
Seamlessly taking over what used to be Jack Tar, Wynyard Pavilion is a breath of fresh air in North Wharf. Offering a neighbourhood bar feel to what can seem like an exceedingly tourist-heavy area, the space is at once comforting and modern with warm timber, high ceilings, and light marine touches. The wine list has been carefully thought out here, with some of the best local New Zealand wines on offer from Waiheke Island to Central Otago. We recommend you take advantage of this spot being the new kid on the block, it won’t last long. This is the perfect relaxed spot to soak in ocean-views with a cold vino in hand, so get in there quick–Before everyone else catches on.
Few things say summer better than a roof-top bar, and La Zeppa probably has one of the most well-known rooftops in Auckland. With up-close and personal views of the Sky Tower, La Zeppa’s roof-top gets all day sun with brightly lit-up lanterns that take you from day to night. A little cooler and more industrial feeling inside, cool greys and metal finishes give the spot a timeless modern feel. With the perfect Mediterranean tapas to accompany your drinks in the sun, try something more local to quench your thirst–With four top-notch rosé’s across Malborough, Hawkes Bay, and Gisborne on offer.
