Sugo turns to its fans for help
Pasta aficionados Sugo Pasta Kitchen have announced a crowdfunding push to raise funds for their third restaurant in Sale.
With two successful sites under their belt, co-owners – and brothers – Michael and Alex De Martiis are looking to bring their popular pasta menu to Stanley Square in Sale, as part of the area’s regeneration project.
At the start of 2021, the team at Sugo announced their plans for the third site and so far, they’ve covered £190k of the £275k target. With another £85k desperately needed to complete the fit out of the restaurant, they’ve turned to their legions of loving customers for support.
In their launch video on Instagram, the brothers explained that due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, they hit a “funding brick wall” as banks “aren’t keen to lend to indie restaurants.” In return for Kickstarter cash, supporters can now buy what is essentially a gift voucher with their donation, which can be redeemed in any Sugo restaurant throughout 2022.
Sugo is famous on Manchester’s pasta circuit for its Southern Italian influence and for bringing a creative twist to traditional dishes. It’s first two restaurants in Altrincham and Ancoats, opened in 2015 and 2018, have achieved cult levels of success, with simple and fresh pasta swimming in decadent slow-cooked sauces. Popular plates include the House Sugo, recchiette with flavourful beef shin ragu and the seafood Scoglio, complete with king prawns, baby squid and mussels.
If you’re likely to visit the pasta masters, a donation is just like paying for your trip upfront – a win-win situation. There’s also the opportunity to be part of Manchester foodie history, with your name written on the Founders wall, and the option to enjoy an unlimited pasta dish of choice for an entire year – we’d recommend the Strozzapreti with Tuscan sausage and porcini butter.
The site itself will be part of a new regeneration project at Sale shopping precinct, which has been renamed Stanley Square in a nod to the area’s heritage. If all goes to plan, Sugo will be joining the ranks of fellow Italians, Rudy’s and a new food hall from the team behind the General Stores.
With the campaign running until 13th January, there’s plenty of time for the restaurant to hit its target. With £30,000 being raised in the first 24 hours, things are looking positive for Sugo to open its doors (for the third time) in 2022.
