If dear old Dad loves seafood, then Akarana Eatery is the place to be this Father’s Day. Whether your plan is to spoil your father for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Akarana Eatery has a divine menu for every meal of the day. Start your morning with the pain au chocolat French toast with affogato ice cream, berry compote and meringue.
Or visit in the evening to ‘Walk the Plank’ and get a platter to share; including a selection of cured meats, smoked salmon and Whitestone Mount Domet double cream brie. There are also classic Kiwi dishes such as Today’s Catch; the tempura style fish and chips that incite nostalgic memories of trips to the beach.
Fantail and Turtle is the ideal spot for beer-loving fathers. With fresh and local craft beers, real ale, and cider across 30 taps, it’s heaven on earth. The food menu continues to amaze with both a modern seasonal tapa-style menu and a separate artisan pizza napoletana menu. Beer and pizzas, could you ask for more?
The Naples-inspired pizza menu is mouth-watering, with options such as virna with spiced Spanish chorizo, capsicum, mozzarella and Napoli sauce and the indulgent Brigitte which pairs portobello mushrooms with truffle, mascarpone and fresh mozzarella. If you prefer the sharing style of dining then grab a handful of plates for the table. The duck fat kumara, can’t be missed, served with an elderflower gel. You’ll also find chicken shish and Hawke’s Bay lamb ribs – delish!
What’s more special than a trip to Waiheke Island for Father’s Day? Enjoy the leisurely glide across the water, stroll through the vineyards and take a well-deserved break by the ocean. Josh Emett’s Oyster Inn offers a beautiful view of the water and their menu reflects the location. When in Waiheke, you simply have to indulge in the fresh kaimoana – it’s a rite of passage – whether that be a dozen freshly shucked oysters, ceviche, classic fish and chips or the insanely delicious scampi linguine, paired with a chilli pomodoro and crispy fried garlic.
However, for the land-lovers out there, you can still dig into a good old steak. The steak frites is 300g of succulent scotch fillet with a side of oyster mushrooms and a healthy dose of sauce au poivre. The peppercorn sauce is perfectly creamy and enhances the rich flavours in the dish.
Hello Beasty made its debut on the Viaduct in 2018 and it’s quickly become our favourite spot for intimate family gatherings. The contemporary Asian fusion cuisine takes inspiration from Japan, Korea and China; creating an outstanding and delicious menu. The sharing-style of dining allows everyone at the table to try an array of dishes.
On the menu you’ll find options like miso-braised Wagyu brisket Gua buns and crispy fried soft-shell crab. A personal favourite of ours is the quirky KFC; the Korean fried cauliflower is lathered in a spicy gochujang glaze and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Explore the selection of Beasty sashimi and discover the likes of Big Glory Bay salmon, Ruakaka kingfish and market tuna.
The Cav is a historic pub that’s been around longer than your old man, the chic gastrobar is perfect for family gatherings. Specialising in pub classics with a twist; from the double cheese, double Wagyu burger to schnitzel (pork, chicken and veal) and fried chicken. Dine on an array of sharing dishes like pork belly corn dogs, garlic dusted calamari or crispy cauliflower bites.
Or head over to the bigger dishes; the salted pork belly taco is out-of-this-world amazing with slaw, pickled red onion and a tomatillo and yoghurt dressing. If your Dad loves a juicy steak then the 250g of Angus beef scotch fillet is a sure winner. Served with a burnt onion mash, crispy cauliflower and steak butter or gravy.
