Manchester's best speakeasies

In the past, speakeasies were popular hangout spots for those who wanted to socialise and enjoy alcohol which was illegal at the time. While drinking is no longer prohibited, speakeasies haven’t lost their appeal. On the contrary, Manchester boasts several venues that attract customers with their intimate atmosphere, cosy décor and often an underground location that adds to the allure. Check out our top 5 venues below…

One of the most anticipated openings of 2023, Red Light is everything you could expect from a modern speakeasy: it’s tricky to find (but not impossible, just look out for the red light), the décor features plush boots which makes it perfect for any occasion, plus it’s LGBTQ+ and dog friendly. When you step into the venue, it’s almost like you step into another world where everyone is welcome and aims to have fun. Red Light is mainly known for its delicious cocktails. The menu highlight is definitely an apple Martini – a must-try if you visit them!

Lost in Tokyo is an underground bar decorated with paper lanterns and a Tokyo-inspired menu, so a perfect mid-week destination for those looking for something unique. It attracts a younger crowd and its popularity comes mainly from a wide range of Japanese whiskies and creative cocktails available on the menu (our favorite is probably Memoirs of a Geisha made of vodka, strawberry liqueur, apple, lemongrass and vanilla syrup).

If you need somewhere to unwind after work, add it to your list and let yourself get lost in good drinks and a chill atmosphere. You can also visit on the weekend when it gets especially crowded and take advantage of the 2-4-1 cocktail offer, then dance the night away listening to popular tunes played by a DJ.

Rendition has that speakeasy vibe you’re looking for. Even though the venue is easy to find unlike traditional speakeasies, the atmospheric interior gives the impression of a hidden spot (even bathrooms are classy and worth photographing). It’s the kind of place you’d bring a date to or friends you want to impress. Whether you decide to visit during the day or at night, you’ll appreciate a cosy atmosphere and a big selection of cocktails that will get you in the mood even more than the décor itself. Additionally, you can enjoy live music every Thursday from 5 pm provided by an amazing jazz & soul band. What’s not to like?

Speak in Code
cuisinesCocktail bar

Speak in Code is best described as a drinking den with industrial New York vibes where you can relax with a hip-hop playlist in the background. The biggest selling point is that the cocktails are carefully crafted and unique. For example, you can have a mix of Tequila & Sotol blend, Elderflower, Italicus Rosolio and Paprika’d Grenadine. They’re best enjoyed with small plates such as cauliflower wings, polenta crisps and duck steamed buns. If you fancy some escapism this week, make sure to stop by. PS. You don’t need a code to get in.

Behind Closed Doors
cuisinesCocktail bar

Behind Closed Door is a modern speakeasy type of bar with a twist; you can expect a sense of secrecy thanks to the retro interior with neon lights and some BDSM accents. It might not be a good idea for a first date but if you’ve been dating for a while and want to spice things up, it might be just the right choice.  It’s also a great location for a date night with friends: take fun photos and sip on cocktails with erotic names. With funk and soul music in the background and the vintage telephones that you can use to dial the bar, you won’t be disappointed with the experience.
