The Dish Cult Team are very proud to be allies of our LGBTQ+ community in Aotearoa and globally.
We’ve made a list containing our favourite LGBTQ+ friendly eateries, bars and cafés to kick Pride Month off with a bang. Happy Pride!
Family Bar is an iconic location in Auckland’s LGBTQ+ scene; it has catered to many a drunken night out and has been the location of countless memorable occasions. Whether you’re visiting for a drink, dance or special event – it’s guaranteed to be memorable. Enjoy a selection of talented DJs, karaoke, surprise visits from drag queens and provocative male dancers. There’s never a dull night. The inclusive and sometimes naughty nightclub has a great selection of cheap and delicious drinks that always go down a treat.
Anyone for the cabaret? Embrace the glitz and glam of K-Roads finest drag show. Caluzzi is everything we could have imagined and more; it’s magnificent, exciting and incredibly entertaining. It takes dinner and a show to a whole new level, and we couldn’t be happier. Caluzzi hosts the longest-running cabaret in New Zealand, and it more than lives up to its hype. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming; the experience is truly unforgettable! Book a table for yourself and your crew and settle in for a night like none other. Start off with a glass of wine, a cocktail or two, and nibble on garlic bread and flavourful soup. For mains, choose between a tender and juicy rib-eye steak, a roast vegetable filo or a succulent pesto chicken breast. Dessert comes in the form of a cute and quirky Caluzzi cupcake.
Start your day the right way, with delicious Asian fusion cuisine reimagined; Fat Kitty Café is raising the bar with its innovative menu and flavourful dishes. Co-owners Amelia Leath and Jarrad Amanono are queer-identifying polyamorous chefs; that have set out to shake up the industry with bold and creative ideas. Most of the menu is vegan friendly, with insane dishes like the tofu-French toast with rum caramelised pineapple, maple syrup and vegan whipped cream. Other options include big boy broccoli, a BBQ ‘pork’ pie, kimchi double fried rice and a tandoori tofu sandwich. Fat Kitty Café is a great little spot for a quick bite to eat, a coffee on the go or a lazy brunch session with your nearest and dearest.
Situated right across the street from Family Bar on the infamous K-Road is Eagle Bar. The cosy and intimate spot is ideal for weekend catch-ups and the perfect place to kick off the weekend. If you’re looking for something a little less intense but still incredibly fun, Eagle Bar is our go-to. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable, making some of the most dangerously delicious long island cocktails we’ve ever had. Get a group of friends together, line up your favourite tunes on the jukebox and chow down some bar snacks.
Senatus Populusque Romanus, SPQR is a place for everyone, the inclusive and welcoming spot is outstanding. The elegant restaurant sprawls across Ponsonby Road, tempting passers-by to stop for a wine or two. Settle in for brunch, lunch, dinner or drinks – the Italian cuisine is divine, the atmosphere lively, and the drinks unforgettable. SPQR is one of our favourite watering holes on a Saturday afternoon; nibble on a platter board, sip away on champagne or treat yourself to a cocktail. When you stop by for a visit, make sure to try the pizza, it’s not to be missed, specifically the free-range chicken with Italian herbs and Cajun spice.
