Garlicky, creamy, and oh so tasty on a bed of crusty bread to mop up any leftover sauce, mushrooms on toast is one of our favourite comfort dishes. Here’s where to find the very best in Auckland.
There is nothing we love more than escaping to Cornwall Park Café after a busy week. Surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful scenery, this spot is serene, low-key and has everything you could possibly need to re-energise. Take the family out for brunch or treat yourself to a little me time and enjoy the fresh selection of delicious dishes and strong coffees.
One of our favourite dishes is the mushroom medley; it is punchy, flavourful and unforgettable. The creamy mushrooms are paired with a poached egg, shaved parmesan, crispy kale, dukkah and truffle oil on herb focaccia. Wash it down with coffee, a fruity smoothie, or our go-to, the peach Bellini; we cannot say no to sparkling wine and peach purée.
If you are looking for an inner-city brunch retreat, Chuffed is the place for you; tucked away on High Street, this café is laid-back and lively. With a sun-soaked deck and cosy interior, this café is perfect whatever the weather. The cuisine is traditional brunch-style with beauties like the egg’s benny, open omelette and Cubano sandwich.
However, one of the ultimate crowd-pleasers at Chuffed is the mushrooms on toast. The mushroom combines mushrooms with caramelised onion, whipped feta, basil pesto, almond, parmesan and a poached egg on sourdough; this is the perfect dish to kick-start your day! Chuffed also offers a tempting selection of cocktails, beers, wines and coffees.
Grey Lynn is a bustling suburb with countless bars, restaurants and cafés. One, in particular, stole our hearts; Josy Café is a local hot spot for feel-good food and excellent hospitality. Josy has a large indoor and outdoor sitting area, perfect for reunions, family outings and well-deserved brunch breaks.
The menu ranges from breakfast delicacies to succulent steaks, curries and warm vegan bowls. Our morning go-to is Josy’s creamy mushrooms; this is irresistible with spinach, poached eggs, parmesan, herbs and balsamic on 5-grain toast. We love to pair our mushroom on toast with a cheeky English breakfast tea or silky-smooth latte.
Circus Circus is hard to miss with its quirky and colourful circus theme. It is also one of Mount Eden’s oldest and most notorious cafés. It is practically a crime to visit Mount Eden without stopping by for a quick snack or coffee.
The brunch menu is swoon-worthy with delectable options like ricotta pancakes, sloppy joe hot dogs and steak sandwiches. The mushrooms on toast are simplicity at its finest with mixed mushroom stroganoff, parmesan and toasted sourdough. If you want to kick things up a notch, we recommend throwing in some crispy bacon. Pair brunch with a fresh and fruity smoothie, a cleansing tea or an iced latte.
Kingsland is a thriving suburb with bars, restaurants and eateries up and down the main strip, and a popular spot among locals is Kingsland Social. The quaint café serves heavenly food like the candy floss waffles, salmon eggs benny and creamy mushrooms.
The latter pairs mushrooms with homemade bread and poached eggs. Opt to add on a potato roti or roasted kumara for an extra layer of tastiness. Kingsland Social is the perfect café for family catch-ups on the weekends and quick coffee-driven visits before work.
