Why have a plain hot dog with tomato sauce, when you can have Melbourne’s must-try dish of the week?

Foostcray’s Hot Dog Hustle takes the traditional Japanese dish of tempura prawns and turns it into a hot dog that really packs a punch.

Is that the full name?

Nope, It’s “Ebi prawn” on the menu (ebi is Japanese for prawn).

Where do you get it?

Hot Dog Hustle, 24 Irving Street, Footscray VIC 3011, across from Footscray Station

Why is it a winner?

The team at Hot Dog Hustle obviously believe that everything tastes better in hot dog form. They may well be right because the combination of two golden fried tempura prawns with roasted sesame slaw inside a toasted bun with a liberal amount of vegetarian barbecue sauce and Kewpie mayo drizzled on top and sprinkled with roasted nori is nothing short of winning. Get yourself some Onion rings and Hustle fries to go with it and you’re sure to be in hot dog heaven.

What does the restaurant say?

At Hot Dog Hustle, we really look to cater to all types of eaters. Our customers truly appreciate the Ebi hot dog because it's somewhat unconventional to have a seafood option in a 'Hot Dog Shop'. Breaking down the 'Ebi Hot Dog', you have the hot and fluffiness of the milk bun, the crunchiness of the fried prawn, coupled with a crisp and refreshing slaw. All of this from your local 'Hot Dog' shop.

Anything else to know?

Hot Dog Hustle started as a food truck in 2017 in industrial Braybrook where you will still find a location. Since then, the business was voted best food truck in 2020 and has gone on to establish the Footscray location. The owners were determined to bring some LA food truck energy to Melbourne with their Asian style street dogs and, with other dogs on the menu including Bulgogi cheesesteak and the sweet pork floss in Floss like a boss, they may have just succeeded.
