How does a Lebanese pastry that strikes the perfect balance between crispy and soft, sweet and savoury sound?
It’s Melbourne’s must-try dish of the week and you’ll have to go to Brunswick’s Teta Mona to try it…
Is that the full name?
Nope, haven’t even told you what it’s called yet. It’s “cigara bi lahem” on the menu.
Where do you get it?
Teta Mona, 100A Lygon St, Brunswick East VIC 3057
Why is it a winner?
If you think a warm hug from your Lebanese teta (grandmother) will soothe all that ails you, you’re right. But if you don’t happen to have your very own teta, you should make your way to Teta Mona, order one of the banquets and make sure you include the cigara bi lahem. These crispy cigar-shaped pastries are filled with spicy lamb and super caramelised onion. On top, there’s the right amount of pomegranate molasses to counter the savoury of the lamb, plus crushed walnuts for extra crunch. Served with a side of thick yoghurt and a simple salad, it all adds up to the perfect entrée, to get you started on your Middle Eastern feast. Loose pants recommended.
Anything else to know?
With it’s homely vibe and outdoor space, Teta Mona is perfect for a big group. There are three banquet options available, at rock bottom prices. Whatever you choose, there will definitely be leftovers, which the friendly staff will pack for you to take home.
